New O gauge wheel sets

I've found it too difficult to maintain radial and axial runout with hub insulation - partly because of the higher torque loading at the hub.

It's much better to insulate the tyre with the added advantage that you only have to insulate one wheel on each axle.

Provided, of course, that you remember to install the wheel sets with the insulated wheels all on the same side of the locomotive.... :)

For the wheels I propose to use, I was going to use split axles and axleboxes and insulate the crankpin. Insulating at the tyre would be tricky and involve a different method to my usual when the wheels are made. My main concern is that as the driver has a return crank as well as the connecting rod on it, I need to be sure the crankpin won't turn in the Tufnol bush. I assume the Tufnol will need to have a thin flange on the outside to prevent the coupling rods from shorting out on the wheels' bosses. If anyone (Colin?) could suggest dimensions, that would help a lot.

Susie,
I bore out the boss 1/8" for the tufnol c/p bush then re-bore 3/32" for the brass crankpins that I turn up.This is all done on the miller with the wheel held in a jig.
The c/p's are drilled and tapped for 10B.A
The bush is turned as a top hat to form the insulation between c/p and wheel boss, about 0.35mm.

These are glued in place with 5 min. Devcon, I usually leave them for 24 hrs. on top of boiler to harden off before boring out for the c/p which is also glued in place.

Susie

I have never had a problem with the crank pin rotating in a tufnol bush with or without glue to hold them in place.

There just isn't enough force from the crank to move anything.

Thanks for this guys. I need to make sure that all would be okay. With all that ironmongery flailing about, if anything came loose I would probably be deported...

Those Duchess wheels look stunning, in fact so good I would be tempted to move my Duchess kit well up the list to build if they were available.

I'll have the test samples in January Richard plus the first samples from the hard tooling for the GW tender wheels. Knowing F7 are doing their Duchess they'll be high on the list to coincide with that.

Hi Elliot

Can you tell me when you'll be in a position to produce the Bullied wheels? I'm after three sets for S7. To avoid any confusion, thats 18 drivers. Are you intending to do the bogie and tender wheels as well?

Regards

Steve

Steve,

I'm pushing forwards with the Bullieds in parallel with all my other wheels determined to get something out first 1/4 of this year. All the wheels will be available including bogie and tender.

3D CAD pictures are fine, but that casting is superb, absolutely superb. Really hope it works out for you commercially too.

That does look good.

How much of it was machined? Do you have a picture of the wheel as it comes?

Paul.
Paul,

These were machined from solid on my friends CNC (he got bored over Christmas lol) as I like to check how the CAD data comes out in its true form. Ultimately the castings will look the same as I'll be creating the cavity from the same CAD data for producing the waxes.
