This year our annual Christmas Market weekend break was in Krakow, and by chance, coincided with their annual Christmas cribs (Szopki)competition . Local residents build and enter these scenes, which are quite different to the manger and stable scene we see in Britain. The competition has been held for many decades now and whole families can be involved in the process. The buildings vary from 150cm to 2 metres tall, and are mostly built from card and what looks like the silver foil wrapped round Easter eggs
Some scenes include animations, very similar to the figures one sees on some building clock chimes in Britain.
The competition receives coverage from local TV, and all entries are taken to a local museum for judging by a panel of experts.
Well worth checking out if you're planning a visit to Krakow in December.
