NYMR Gresley set - vandalism last weekend

Last weekend the teak set was damaged by vandalism, there are reports and photos on the web-sites of the NYMR and Minister-FM.

Heartbreaking for those who have spent so many years restoring the carriages to the condition which is appreciated by so many. I was riding in 3669 and 641 earlier this month and the sight of the interior of the buffet car / broken windows elsewhere is depressing.

Looks like there may be a donation web-site to help the NYMR and LNER-CA overcome the setback, maybe Jeanpaul can advise (@lnerjp).

I saw this yesterday on the other place and local news. The only good thing seems to be that they didn't set fire to any of the irreplaceable carriages concerned. There is indeed a donations page, hopefully the link will work for those interested:

Teak Set Appeal

While the set is insured, it probably won't cover everything, and NYMR are talking about increased security, carriage shed etc. as ways to make good use of donations.

That is just sickening, but appears to be a fact of life for heritage railways.

A few years ago a push pull set was fully refurbished to run behind (and in front of) the Class 33 at the GCR, Loughborough. Steph and I saw it running a shuttle - a wonderful sight and probably unique in recreating the Class 33/4TC sets on the Bournemouth run. A week or two later we heard the news that some scrotes had stripped all the brass and copper while the unit was parked at Swithland. Regrettably the owners gave up and the set was never re-restored. Ultimately I believe the set was sold as single carriages and, in fact, some of them might have been scrapped.

This was a major concern, but petty vandalism occurs all the time.

All power to the NYMR in their determination to get the affected vehicles back in to use.
