I knew things were going too well, the final coat of paint was on d1011, so it was varnish time, a quick blast with my usual mix of gloss varnish,  matt earth and a dash of matt varnish, lovely job until it dried and it turned into crackle glaze  :shit: I usually use cellulose paint, but I had tried railmatch this time and I suspect the mr colour thinners had a reaction :headbang:.
So I spent last night stripping the whole lot with IPA and fairy power cleaner, it's still not all off, but it's 85% done. One plus is that JLTRT resin is resistant to the stripper mix .
Moral of the story? If it ain't broke don't fix it, and I shall be going back to cellulose

What a b.....d. The varnishing if the most frightening bit of the whole thing especially when you have spent hours doing the lining. I've only had to strip off two models
thank god. My heart goes out to you. I stick to cellulose as far as possible but some colours just are'nt available in the car ranges.

Yep I hate varnish too after one disaster with the *******  stuff on my 47 :headbang:  :headbang:  :headbang:, I have come to the conclusion that it is best avoided with diesels, I just brush thinned varnish over the transfers only now ..........once bitten twice shy for me  :vista:

Sorry to hear of your troubles Cynric - it's a real pi*ser when that happens.  Fortunately I've only ever had to strip one or two models so far due to painting problems.

Did you use acrylic over enamel?  I suspect that the enamel wasn't dry enough, which is what has caused the problems.  I've had the same problem before, but using acrylic lacquer over cellulose.

Edit - I've remembered this morning that it was acrylic lacquer over enamel that caused the problem, not cellulose.

Thanks for the sympathy chaps. it is now 98% stripped, just the nooks and crannies to clean out, but I cant face that tonight  :headbang:
I have to say it again but top marks to JLTRT for the grade of resin  it has resisted some quite strong chemicals.
It was enamel over acrylic paint. Im trying to move away from the more flamable/toxic paints, but I shall be reverting back to cellulose, and I may well invest in a small fireproof cabinet for keeping the thinners and paints as I dont really like storing them indoors.

Hi Phill

I also have doubts about using Kleer too....

CME

Hi CME

I only use Railmatch enamels and Kleer for the 'backing' to waterslide transfers and then as a topcoat over both waterslide and Pressfix (I do not use Methfix) and touch wood, no problems to date.

Hi I once varnished a loco painted with Railmatch BR Blue with Phoenix satin varnish thinned with phoenix thinners and sprayed this through my airbrush.. It reacted and the finish went "crazed" now I never mix brands or types of paint cellulose/acrylics or vice versa  :vista: :vista:  Ross............

+1 on the Sympathy front, Cynric. :shit:

The one time I had trouble like this was when I re-positioned those infamous grilles on my Class 22.
The original paint order was Etch Primer (which I think was cellulose), then black aerosol undercoat, enamel green, and Dullcote varnish.
When I'd stripped the area back and re-done the grilles, I tried to re-cover the patch with etch primer, 'feathering' it at the edges- which is where it reacted with the enamel... :headbang: :headbang: I did get around it in the end, somehow, but I'd have hated to have to strip an entire model...

I am really looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labours on the 13th, I don't know how well I would have coped with your "setback" - full marks for diving straight back in and taking the necessary steps, it's not as if its an inexpensive wagon and thats leaving aside all the time you'd already put into it

Having just spoken to the guy moving out of "my" shop, I will now have a nice secure glass topped/fronted cabinet in which to safely display the results of your labours on the 13th

Simon, I'm a little worried there won't be much to see!! Still I can bring an MMP tank wagon :)

Cynric

An MMP tank wagon will be very welcome, but don't worry if you can't bring anything - it will be great just to meet you.

I will have the iron mink done and Steve Cook will be bringing his tool van in SR brown which I am really looking forward to seeing.

Something a bit shorter will be good anyway as it will then fit into the "posh" illuminated vertical glass display case.

I have been testing sparkling wines and checking out the "Larkhall Inn" this weekend ahead of the "grand opening" ;D (well, it is my birthday today)

Currently going through my model railway stock (Ratio kits, some Parkside, Wills, Peco, Romford - all 4mm) and I have been surprised at the hike in their prices since I bought them in, about a 50% increase in rrp over most things since the end of the last Millenium

I am not going to re-price any stocks but new stuff coming in will be at current prices. I am quite getting into it all now, just need to re-activate my Slaters account and dig out a few more bits of stock from the loft.

Furious cutting of plywood and paintbrush wielding may have to take place next week....

Although I can't be there some of my modelling can: you could display my 1:32 dia 1/032 open, prior to Steve bringing it back home.

I'd be delighted to Simon, thank you very much for suggesting it

So that's a GW iron mink, FYNR tool van, BR 5 plank in 1/32 scale and a very tricky looking tank wagon in 7mm scale.

Not to forget Neil and "Shell Island".

I think that "Spotty Siding" will be installed in the shop window and I guess "Thunderbolt" should put in an appearance too.

Oh and a few books I suppose.........

Happy birthday Simon.  :)  I don't think I can make it to the grand opening (I could have done if it was yesterday, as my wife and I were in Bath), but I hope it all goes well.

I'll do my best to remember to bring it back Simon  ;D

The FYNR Van is progressing slowly, too much damp in the atmosphere to paint the body today, but I've made a good start on all the other bits...should be done in time...
I'll bring one of the 'big, ugly sisters' along too  8)

Just to make things even better, my youngest got into the kitchen this morning  and decided to play  with 'Diesel ten'    resulting in a damaged cab  :headbang:  fortunately Laurie is sending me a new cab  so a big  to JLTRT for customer service.
When it finally gets rebuilt I will rename it Western Disaster, anything that could go wrong, has gone wrong with this build  :headbang: I think a black cat must have crossed in front of it somewhere  8)
