Any ideas what the plate is for or where it's from? I note that two features have been broken off the back, which may be relevant...

Looks too early and primitive to be railway related. I think it is a piece of canal trim. Whether a from a milepost, bridge or lock number I can't say. Possibly 1770s or so, probably pre 1800 as most later mileposts etc had more information on them. Stroudwater Navigation could be a candidate but it apparently didn't have mileposts, so maybe not. It was also a fairly coarse scale canal so maybe the plate marked a refuge area.

I've done a number of Google searches to try and identify what this plate may have been for, but all to no avail I'm afraid.

On the railway front, the best I get is that S7 is a type of coaching stock introduced in 2012 on the London Underground - S in this case standing for 'sub-surface.' The plate looks a tad older than 2 years however!!

Otherwise, I like Overseer's suggestion that it's non railway related, and might be to do with canals?

Whichever, it still might look nice adorning some ones railway room / workshop wall?? :)

Sorry I can't be more helpful
