Pantograph Milling machine

Hi

I have been offered a pantograph milling machine (in return for Heyside running rights!) - a Taylor Hobson Model CB (which is the same as the Model C except for a small difference in the motor drive system so I'm told). It is in full working order, missing only one drive belt and has previously been used for engraving only, coming with a full set of engraving cutters. I want to use it for scratchbuilding components like mainframes etc., but don't know what milling cutters I need, or where to get them from.

Has anyone here got any ideas - or know of anyone familiar with such machines to help me start?

Thanks

Richard

I have heard of such machines very usefull for making copies of paterns but i have no individual experience of working one. I would have it as a guess it uses collet style cuttes but without seeing the machine I couldn't be able to give any more insight ny brother is a tool maker if you can obtain pictures and I will show them to him

Its many years since i used one, but we used to have a special grinding machine for sharpening the milling cutters as they were quite expensive at the time. I believe the West Mersea crew have a couple, and I sure they will be able to fill you in on the cutters etc
Very useful bit of kit if I could get one into the cellar I would :headbang:

Right Ho!

Got myself sorted. I've had a lot of guidance, both privately and via the Yahoo 7mm group, so I know where I'm going now. I can take delivery of the machine whenever I have space available, and it seems spares and cutters etc. are still readily available and not excessively priced for a machine that is some 20 plus years older than I am!

I'm trying to work out a suitable first scratchbuild, and I reckon that an L&Y 2-4-2T fits the bill pretty well - simple loco, and suitable for Heyside. It won't happen just yet as I have the layout to complete, but quite exciting none-the-less.

Cheers

Richard

are these of any interest?

Scale7JB and Eastside Pilot are both learning to use the one at WMHQ, don't know exactly which model it is but Peter Hunt has received lots of suggestions about it...[/quote:zygf32ug]

Hello Pint

Thanks for that. I have already acquired the articles - and a very necessary read they are too. I'm just trying to find the Tony Reynalds MRJ article now.

Hi JB

Yes please, I would, principally about cutters - 3 flute versus D - and collett adaptors, and mounting both pattern and metal on the machine.

Did you get a copy?[/quote:1xqsprn2]

Hi

When I said 'I'm just trying to find.....', I meant that literally. I know I possess a copy. It's in one of the magazine boxes under the layout, but so much gets shifted around as we work that I've lost track of where it is! If I look and can't find, can I come back to you then for a copy, rather than troubling you unneccessarily now.

Thanks

Richard
