The rear lean-to of the second wharf building has had some corrugated material added. Bog standard Wills sheet meant for 4mm but the sheets size at just over 2' wide and 6' long so fine for 7mm IMO.

All the edges have been thinned down though. No I haven't sorted out the joints and filler yet...

I'm thinking of a tired old felt and batton roof on the other rear lean-to. Experimenting with different finishes on areas of the buildings that will seldom be seen.

Where are you going to try those Finecast sheets you bought at Stafford ?

That does look nice. With my OCD I think I'd struggle to make a nice random state state of disrepair like that.

and another one bites the dust - you just can't "un-see" it now. :))

I do have to battle hard not to get repeat patterns in the randomness. Problem with the tiles is that they are self adhesive and the sticky is very strong, so you only get one chance to position a tile.

Yes, we've caught another one! ;)

I used the "sticky" slates some years ago Chris and you're quite right, its a one chance to position them but definitely worth using if you don't fancy cutting individual rows.

However, if you really want to wear a modellers straight jacket then try some thatch a la "the Pendon way " !!!

I think some of you chaps may have seen this before but it certainly focuses your mind and dexterity.

You've put them straight, but staggered. Would they be inline, but curved?

I've deliberately done them a bit wobbly at the bottom. It's quite a severe curve which does not fully show up in photos. Doing them following the curve left big gaps between the tiles. They closer follow the more gentle curve towards the top.

One thing is for certain they aren't coming unstuck without the use of a big chisel!

The roofs are all removable. It means I can work on the separately without the bulk of the building getting in the way. Also means I have access to fit the doors and windows from the inside and that the tiles don't get damaged whilst working on the stonework. Should help painting too.

That's very nice Grahame. Thankfully no thatch to do on Pencarrow!

So you'd recommend the tiles then?

Used them before, but in 4mm, on buildings for Damian's Diesels in the Duchy. The big long wagon repair shop in the middle of the layout and then the signal box both had them.

Thought I'd give them a go on 7mm and got 3 different types from York Model Making. The place to try them out was on buildings at the rear of the layout. They take a while to apply if you cut them into small sections. Depends what effect you're going for.

They are good but the plain tiles could do with some wider tiles adding to the sheet to do the ends properly.

I do like them but they aren't a cheap option if you're doing large areas.

Chris, if you intend getting any more it might be worth mentioning it to York Model Making about producing some wider slates on their sheets, you never know they could consider it.

I had a similar problem when I used them on a 4mm build but it didn't show as much.

Going to drop them a line.
