The wee beastie has now had the smokebox done, so the boiler unit is now firmly fixed. The body removed from its board.
Guess who forgot to solder the nut to the front footplate under the smokebox?

As you can see it fits nicely on the frames.

The more I clean the more it tarnishes. I have found this with one or two strip down to kit parts and rebuilds I've done.

Part I have not been looking forward to, is the coal rails. As a rebuild I do not have the parts of a new build. The beading from tender and the filled in coal rails need making. I was going to use the kit ones, and fill the back, but they don't return to the cab. Unless the were altered by original builder.

So I didn't fancy making 3 bits of beading, and rails, so this is what I did.

I cut a plate and shaped the outside to a good fit as per the beading. I then cut the coal plates and fitted just inboard of the plate.

Then I added the rails themselves.

And in place.

The final act was to remove the centre before final fitting. It now looks like the GWR version.

I am down to two numbers from the last two batches. One has the hanging iron as per my build. The other has a straight one, so could be easily modified.

Congratulations on taking the RR loco Peter. I must admit I saw it on the E&T stand but didn't have the courage to take it on. So I'm full of admiration for you, especially since you're doing such a good job. I'll look forwards to seeing more progress.

Thanks Rod

I bought it knowing that if it was not rebuildable
I could probably get my money back selling the wheels. So far I've only come amiss on one head case that I didn't redo. But I did recover the castings.
But for the price I thought it was worth a punt. I will sell it on once done, it will find some bits for me.

Progress has been good but slow. The brass bits have mostly been scratch building.
The steps are done and have mostly treads from the spares boxes. Front and rear lamp irons are from various sources. It will be number GWR 38. It has a guard around the top lamp iron. As I couldn't find any photos of the rear, it is guesswork from glimpses in front 3/4 shots. Lamp iron still needs moving up into it.

Cab roof has been made and was the las of the major kit brass bits left.

I have also made up the fire iron holders, and a tank strap which is quite prominent in the photos.

Last up two overall shots. Tis time to go back to the frames. Here again there are a few bits missing. I have mad a start with two rather large sand boxes, these still need fitting.

More soon I hope. I am also planning what the h*** to do with the 2P tender.

Between Dave's photo above and another I've found. Just when you think it's all over, five more handrails need fitting.

First the good news
There is only a few bits to glue on the body before priming. I think it's close enough now. There is still the frames to do, and the back head. I did have to reshape the dome, the one I had did not look round enough. Should get it done tonight.

The bad news is lack of transfers. I really need need small and large early BR emblems. But what I thought I had turned out to large later ones.
This means the Dean goods will have to wait now. And the RR R1 will probably be in green with either GWR on the tanks, or might even get British Railways on the side I saw a photo of one like that just need to see if mine would match.

Here we are finished ready for painting in black GWR livery a change from what was originally planned.

The frames have had the brakes and sanding fitted. I scratch built the sand boxes and the representation of the operating mechanism under the cab.IMG_20200326_215414621.jpg
IMG_20200326_215521565.jpg
IMG_20200326_215438764.jpg
IMG_20200326_215344727_HDR.jpg

I added the front springs over the footplate, as the loco had them in the last GWR livery.

IMG_20200326_215116818.jpg

Now we have a dilemma, Chris Klein has kindly posted some BR emblems to me. So I either try and find a loco with springs above and a large cab ventilator, or take off the springs and add some to the frames. I can't do the GWR version as it had odd lettering, which would need ordering. Back to the books and search.

End result no painting for a few days.

In the mean time. Backheads, this it what it came with. It has LNWR written on the back.

This is what I think I will use with fittings from the spares box.

Dear Peter,

It is incredible what you’ve undertaken on such an ‘old dog’ of the original build! Great craftsmanship - really enjoyed your thread!

Neil.

Thanks Neil
As long as you do not spend silly money purchasing. You can get the money back. But mostly I enjoy turning them around, even if the air is blue most of the time in some sessions.
