Keep going Peter, you're doing a great job. In any case, you can't let the B'stard who design these crappy parts you're working with, get the better of you.

Incidentally, I never realised that "B'stard" was a real name until I met a nice young lady with that surname at one of my customer's, back in the day. Until then I thought it had just been made up for Rick Mayall in the TV series, "The New Statesman".

Cheers,
Peter

Onto the wheels, yes the reinforcing around the crankpin. It's a shame the wheels don't come with it. It is far easy to remove than add.
Here's how we are doing, blanks cut an glued in, balance weights need rivets adding.

IMG_20200509_235751240.jpg

The centre one is solid, and the outer ones have the middle removed. Only three more wheels to cut out.

We seem to be getting bits finished.
The wheels are now ready for painting. I just can't believe how long they took.

The tender framed are done I just needed to add the guard irons. Also the body has had the fire iron posts fixed, along with lamp irons and hoses. Casting have been glued on. The axle boxes etc took a lot to make respectable. Which I'd looked at them earlier. So I could of got replacements. Since fixing I've managed to break one. So once this is fixed, the tender is ready for paint too.

Only bit left now is the loco body. A start on the details has begun. But there is something that is really bugging me now. I copied the original cab roof and side wrapper, I just shortened it. I start to fit the cab beading and handrails. But it looked wrong. I reshaped it, looked better, but still wrong. The cab roof should extend over the handrail. Will think about this for a bit, before I decide how to correct it.

IMG_20200518_225041277.jpg

The washout plugs are fitted to both sides of the fire box, aswell as two little pear shaped covers lower down.

IMG_20200518_225052123.jpg
IMG_20200518_225116039.jpg

The angle bead over the front slasher has been fixed too.

IMG_20200518_225100581.jpg

Still lots to do, but I feel I'm making progress again. Will be pleased to see the back of this one.

Think I have cracked it. I'm finally happy with the roof profile.
I decided in the end to fit fillets. It took a while to get the match to existing roof shape.

This is where we were.
IMG_20200518_225041277.jpg

This is where I am now. To me it looks right.

IMG_20200519_224245579.jpg

Just the other side to do now. I am now hoping that this is the last of the problems, and I can get on with the detailing.

Most of the firebox details are done, there's still the whistle and the cladding cleats to do. The mud hole covers took some time to do. The character of the loco is slowly coming through.

Must do some serious cleaning, although I wash up after each session, it's getting very black in places.

In the last post, I forgot to add that the cab roof and cab floor and splashers had been fitted. I think the roof will now pass muster.

IMG_20200521_232050366.jpg

Ever onwards, handrails and vacuum ejector? To start the easiest side first, well even the easy side is not a straight forward handrail. I used a brass rod bored at one end to take 0.7 wire. The rod was mounted using 0,8 half round to make split pin type handrail type knobs. The small handrail at the smokebox was mounted on normal short knobs.

IMG_20200529_094531502.jpg

Now the drivers side. The kit had a brass cast ejector. But on close inspection the front handrail had a long knob on it, so that came off. So did the pipes below the main body. They either were untidy broken or short, not bad for 3 pipes. The top part which still needs fitting was one the wrong way around, and two looked like it had been joined to the main body with blobs of wax.
As you can see I've again used a brass rod to go back to the cab, with again made up fittings.

IMG_20200529_094222799.jpg
IMG_20200529_094212058.jpg

You will also note there is a handrail below the ejector, that I initially thought was another pipe. Obviously an aid to stop one burning themselves.
Not sure if it can be seen I also fitted the valve chest cover, bit out of sinc, but I found it in the box so thought the safest place for it was on the model.
One problem with the kit is all the handrail holes are made suitable fore fitting knobs, so most need filling and redrilling.
Looks like the oil boxes my we'll be next on the list to do.

Hi Peter , lovely job mate . Do you use split plns instead of handrail knobs ?
Cheers Paul

Thanks Paul.
I do, but these days only where I can't use turned ones. I used them all the time in 4mm as I found turned ones looked grossly over sized.

Progress is slow, motivation is somewhere else at the moment. The end is getting closer.
I've finished the ejector at last.

IMG_20200604_221018836.jpg

The steps were next, I had the backs but needed to make the treads.

IMG_20200605_213742765.jpg
IMG_20200604_220928596.jpg
IMG_20200604_220953329.jpg

The front buffers were next along with the lamp irons. Which are some cast ones I found in my spares drawer. I also tried the smokebox door for size etc. This was about 1.5mm smaller than the half etched rebate. So I've started to fill this.

IMG_20200608_000059299.jpg

Oilers next. The kit had basic cast white metal ones, I've cleaned them up, drilled them to take the pipe connections. Made the pipe connectors added the pipes to them, and fixed them in the oiler. This was very time consuming, but I like how they look. One done, just got to fix all the parts together for the second one now.

IMG_20200607_225421566.jpg

Here it is in place. I have decided to fix them in place after painting.

You will also see the front step handrails are on. As well as the small cover either side of the smokebox.

More agin later, almost at the point of getting the glue out to fit the casting.

Things progressed well.
I have, it seems come to the end of parts that need to add to the loco. I'm sure I will find something later on. But for now I think it's just the cab details to add.

Well here are the pictures, so what was added? Chimney, dome, sand fillers, vacuum pipe. Smokebox door, with lamp iron and handrail. Piston tail rod covers. Think that's it, apart from the hole for the whistle.

IMG_20200611_000851531_HDR.jpg IMG_20200611_000830259.jpg IMG_20200611_000807961.jpg IMG_20200611_000755490.jpg IMG_20200611_000618924.jpg IMG_20200611_000542988.jpg IMG_20200611_000552455.jpg

I suppose the next thing to do is fit out the cab, and get it ready for painting. I've also made some white metal weights to fit in the ash pan about 100 grams worth. It now without the backhead comes in at about 500grams. Whether it needs more I will wait to find out.
Whilst writing I have thought I still need to make the loco/tender coupling.

IMHO that's a very attractive prototype, Peter. Truly a silk purse from a sow's ear, a process about which I have some experience myself. I remember them on the LNWR - there were one or two shedded at Watford - and a 2P was a regular on a parcels train every afternoon when I stopped at Kenton Rec on the way home from school. It's a shame they suffered (so I'm told) from the same problems as many of Fowler's other designs, where I understand the bearing areas were simply insufficient and would run hot. A situation he either didn't believe or wouldn't take advice on.

Nevertheless, a good looking loco. It reminds me that I have one from the Alan Gibson stable bought many years ago complete with wheels and motor/gearbox. There's no reason not to build it except for the Royal Scot/Midland Garratt/LSWR 02/GWR Railcar......etc etc which keep getting in the way. As the notice in my workshop reminds me every day "God put me on this earth to complete a certain number of projects and right now I am so far behind that I will never die".:))

Thanks Brian.
I'm sure the Gibson kit will be a much better starting place. I have only built one of his and that was in 4mm. A nice selection to build, I have just 2 GW types to do that will passed on, but they require parts, we've not had any post from UK since march, so no chance of me ordering just yet. For me LSWR Shedmaster700, Finney7 M7, a Slater's A12 jubilee, and of course the 0395 to finish.

I've been playing back heads this week. I've two to do one for the 2P and one for the Rhymney loco. Not found any info on the Rhymney engine. So not finished that yet, I will be copying a pannier or other small GW tank. Parts in both kits were in short supply so pilfering from the dwindling stores and scratch building are the order of the day. Which makes progress very slow.
Here is the 2P one, all the fittings and pipework are removable. Trying it to see if painting and finishing is any easier.
I have a few holes to fill, but it is basically done. The layout was copied, from the Midland 2P book, but reversed for left hand drive. If not correct it looks the part.

IMG_20200617_222627012.jpg IMG_20200617_224514775.jpg

Now I really do not have any excuses for not getting on and cleaning up the model ready for painting.

Nicely done, Peter - the efforts on the 2P in particular are nothing short of heroic. I hope you're satisfied with it?

Super job Peter! Walking on water will be a doddle after this.

The 4-4-0 and Fowler tender ensemble looks very attractive, unlike the pairing with the the Horwich and Stanier moguls (and other Stanier locos), where it looks awful.

As to Brian's comment on the bearings being insufficient and Fowler either not believing it or ignoring it, perhaps he was the Donald Trump of his time and lived in an alternative universe to all the other locomotive engineers? Maybe some disinfectant in the oil would have cured the problem? :)):))

I trust you have a Finney 7 or MOK kit to build next for some light relief.

Cheers,
Peter
