Priming & Painting

Hi all,

sorry for starting a new thread but I've got a question about priming whitemetal and thought a complete thread on all aspects of the art of priming and painting might be a good idea I hope

I'm about to put together a couple of whitemetal bufferstop kits and wanted to see if I need to do anything to the whitemetal before it gets blasted by Halfords grey primer? Would I need to give it a once over with a fibre glass pen or can I just spray it as is?

Hi Mark, you should be able to prime straight on. But a quick tickle with the fibre pen is good May i ask who's buffers are they (and anyone reply marsa69's will get detention)

I give everything a scrub with shiny sinks, then thoroughly scrub under hot water to clean any residue. I always clean the model every day I am working in it, which keeps it pretty clean. Exposed parts luke buffers get a dip in metal black before primer, so any paint chipping is not an issue.

Unfortunately (I must resist I must resist) I can't remember as I bought them off ebay. I could do with finding another 4 of them but I'm in no rush. I will let you know if my memory comes flooding back

I have found that chemical blackening white metal works well before priming. I may be talking rubbish, but it may etch the surface which gives a good bond for the paint.
With figures I dip them in the bottle and then wrap them immediatly with kitchen towel to soak up the excess fluid.
Buffers and other fittings already fitted to a loco or rolling stock, I just use an old paint brush.
