Nice to meet W/Ts at heyside and had an excellent day as the quality of the layouts was exceptional. This has been the best Railex yet IMOP. Thanks must go to David and the risboro MRC for the organizing another top notch exhibition. I wonder what next years will be like:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

I've had a wonderful day linesiding at Heyside and admiring many of the other layouts; the 2mm being particularly awe-inspiring.

Having been fortunate enough to see Heyside in its home environment a couple of times, I was amazed to see it looked even bigger without four walls constraining it. Much as I like to see layouts with lots of lush green scenery, I love the gritty industrial look of Heyside and the signals looked superb too!

I thought it was a bit cheeky to build a 2mm layout (Fencehouses), to a size that I could build a very decent S7 layout in, but can't deny it looked impressive!

Saw Heather's work-in-progress Collett coaches, which were very nice and Steph's gearbox etches, which were also very nice. I think these will be an excellent substitute for the normal JLTRT Delrin drive option.

All in all, a great show and all credit to David Lane and his team for making it possible.

+a big number... I have been pondering over why I found Heyside in the open to be more captivating than Bucks and I think Dan has the reason - Heyside has character oozing from every contaminated corner.

Like Dan I have had the opportunity to see this layout in its home and yesterday was the first time that I "noticed" the scenery went further round the curve than the Stourport factory!

Two oddball thoughts on my trip to the show yesterday... and thoughts which only WTs could inspire.

1/ Not a single Blue (7mm) Heljan to be seen... GREEN (and dirty) oil-baths reigned supreme.

2/ Ian Roll was discussing Easybuilds and I promised to send some material... so I sent a PM from Prof Barking last night... and I received this in return "Bonio, bonio bonio"...

Virtual biscuit for a virtual WT-er.

thanks to so many WT members who stopped to talk, a Grand Day Out, regards, Graham

Here are some ropey piccies from yesterday. Fencehouses and Heyside. I'd love some quality time with both and my proper camera gear. :D

Bucks Hill was huge, and very nice, but while it was excellent 3D art it just didn't grab me. I mean no offence by this, but it was all a bit twee. Everything just said "typical GWR summer branch line" to me. Heyside, on the other hand, didn't need to shout. It was grimy, grubby and grey, with an aura of industrial town about it that just worked.

I took my new toy (Samsung S3) along and left my main kit at home. Mine are decidedly ropey to say the least but see below. Next time I'll take my natty little Fuji along as that's perfect for shows. Will stick to using the Samsung for phone calls:rant:

Took plenty of pics of virtually all the layouts but a combination of lighting and a smudge on the lens :headbang: really hacked me off. First-rate show as ever and always worth going. If you've not been before make sure you go next year as you're really missing out.

First, Fencehouses.

As I said, took loads more especially of Fencehouses and Heyside but the photos are a bit :shit:.

Did stock up on some nice goodies though, especially some amazing chain from Ambis, the finest I've ever seen at 40 links per inch!

Thanks for the great feedback on the exhibition, one and all  :)

I've just got home (and collapsed!) after final clear-up from three days of 100percent effort - it's nice to find out that it was all appreciated.

And as said above, it was good to meet/chat/banter/be inspired by all the WT folks there
Only 362 sleeps to the next one . . .

Just back from my first ever visit to Railex and I appear to have picked an absolute classic year.

A first class show overall, congratulations to David and his team for organising and staging it.

Met up with lots of friends both from WT and elsewhere and thoroughly enjoyed myself, I find myself coming away from the show inspired by what I saw with new energy and thoughts for my own modelling endeavours - which is a feeling I don't think I have got from a model railway show that I have attended as a customer for a long time since.

A bit invidious to single out layouts perhaps, different layouts appealed for differing aspects, but here goes with my impressions, sort of in the order I first looked at them:

Leicester South: A magnificent recreation of the late lamented Great Central, plenty of action and good modelling, occasional derailment/hand of god moments but a humdinger nonetheless. Good combination of shunting and main line operation.

Fencehouses: Superb, interesting and original track plan, wonderful scenery including the stupendous viaduct, trains running very smoothly, a showstopper, terrific detail for its size I thought.

Bridge.jpg

St Merryn: Really well modelled and evocative of its subject. Saw a few "gremlins" operation-wise and being hyper picky it all looks a bit too topographically "flat" to my eyes, but real suspension of disbelief well possible and very good display explaining train movements.

Bucks Hill: Breathtaking in many ways, stupendous backscene, very high standard of modelling, I especially liked the "bonus scene" between tunnels with the woodland and village in the background - just lovely. Good operation but slightly let down by signals not being put back at one point, effective DCC sound hardly any hand of God. Some very lovely stock, possibly a bit chocolate box? Fantastic however you look at it.

Heyside: Superb "ensemble piece", best running in the show, very atmospheric "Northern Grit" really well modelled and finished stock and the best working and looking model signals that I think I've ever seen. A real sense of being alongside a real railway watching real trains, great exposition of DCC and sound, I absolutely loved the 8F with rods that clanked as power was taken off, lovely diesels and noises including DMU and pair of Class 20s. I really liked the differing sequences being played out along the layout, shunting, DMU in and out, inspection saloon working, freights into loop - and all done to signals. Brilliant team effort, pretty seamless looking and very impressive operation of layout. Criticisms? Being hyper picky it would have been nice if the straight track could have been more "transitioned" into the corner curves but given that this is an exhibition layout built and managed by a relatively small group of mortals with a sensible budget it is just bloody marvellous.

Tucking Mill: A great picture, complete with working railway - really effective backscene which places it immediately, very artfully done. Still work in progress and getting better every time I see it. Loved the new light railway rolling stock, it looks better without diseasels!

St Ruth: Really interesting layout, clever staging and nice light (but shame about the shadows on the backscene) definitely one to watch.

Polbrook Gurney: Ludicrously improbable juxtaposition of Colliery and railway line, but who cares, the man's a visual genius and despite its tiny size the whole thing packs a huge visual punch. Brilliant textures and colours and lovely collection of different levels and gradients which just oozes atmosphere. Operation was very good, (aided and abetted by Graham "Muz") coal was clearly being mined and shipped out by train. Being hyper picky I would like to see a bit more "dankness" and suggestion of hanging vegetation etc but then I'm a bit weird like that.

Crumley etc is a masteriece of Paul Windle "Wallace and Gromettishness" a genius and original piece of staging and the trains are good too.

My pictures were truly dreadful and as you can guess I spent most time at Heyside. Purchases were some brass strip for my stretcher bars, some very fine chain from Ambis (thanks to Bob for the heads up) and a set of Collett chucks for my Myford from Simon Dunkley -thank you very much Simon.

A truly grand day out and grand company too - thanks to all involved:thumbs:

I can only but echo what everyone else has said, what a fantastic show. An amazing selection of layouts which all in their own right were excellent. The highlight for me was of course seeing Heyside in the flesh for the first time and I have to say the pictures just don't do it justice. I loved watching the lanky tank plod around the yard and like said elsewhere the signals were fantastic and the tired 8f with clanking rods was excellent. Great to catch up with the Heyside lads and others, I would have loved to have stayed all day but my two little monsters didn't share the same enthusiasm unfortunately. Apologies to those I didn't get chance to say goodbyes to but when the kids have had enough its best just to go. Well done to all involved, the best show I've been to in a long time

 Were you car park stewarding at the time? If so, OK, paying punters might have moaned about the car parking (you can't expect any able-bodied person to walk more than 20 metres these days can you? ;) but traders.....come on folks.

Have done my share of car park stewarding duties at a local exhibition and although not in the premier league of Aylesbury (more like Sunday over 75's) you just can't please some of them! Don't throw in the towel Ian:(.

We did have a problem on the Saturday in that the stadium could not find the key to drop the bollards between the stadium and our overspill carpark, the problem was solved later in the day with the use of an angle grinder! but it did cause problems in the stadium car park before it was solved. We also had more people using the bus over the weekend, in fact we ran to capacity on a few trips and had to make a few extra runs to cope. We decided to due to the bollards in the stadium car park to run the bus to the bus stop we have used before by the school rather than try to get the bus to stadium as planned.

Anyway I hope everyone had a great day

Hi Folks

I'm knackered!

We had a great time at Aylesbury. In general, the show was every bit as good as I thought it was going to be, although I did not have that much time to see all the other layouts. The organisation was first rate, and everything went very smoothly.

As far as Heyside was concerned, I was delighted with the running and working signalling, even though the team members had to have a crash course in how we were going to work the layout. It was all a bit manic early Saturday, but by Saturday mid afternoon, we had sorted operational practicalities. Other than operator error (mea culpa on a couple), there were no derailments, and very few spads indeed. We eventually worked out we need 6 operators on at any point in time.

The guy shunting the yard from the front was a good publicity tool, as well as an essential operator, and there was a steady flow of queries, especially about the Dingham operation when we were shunting. I thought there were a few times when we didn't have anything moving quickly enough, but no-one complained to my knowledge, and since it was the very first time it had been run properly (signals only commissioned 2 weeks ago) I think we acquitted ourselves well.

We will have a team debrief over the next month, be constructively critical, see what we can do better, and see what we want to accomplish before the next show. Talking of shows, we had 5 exhibition and 2 magazine requests, and are currently digesting what is on offer.

It was great to see so many WT and other forum members, and I'm so pleased that you all said hello. Thank you too for all your kind comments.

I thought that the sound volume on Heyside was about right. It was very pleasant standing there listening to this ticking over whilst waiting for the road.

Thankyou Bob,

I did take some pictures which I will sort tomorrow, but in the meantime, this is Allan's take on the show....

Railex 2013a.jpg

A long line of grubby black locos. Only one green engine in sight, and that an 08.

... and the most important item of all as far as Allan is concerned, Lady Dikitriki's lemon drizzle cake. I have to report that he hid it on the saturday, and only got the cake tins out of his car under duress on the Sunday morning. I think he was hoping we wouldn't notice :)

Fantastic show. I posted a few dodgy photos from my phone over on the RMweb thread with several individual posts starting here, but there are some much better photos around so it's not worth repeating them here. As I said over there it'll probably be remembered as THE classic Railex, and will be the one to beat.

Great to meet Jerry at last; Tucking Mill and the other 2mm FS layouts impressed me even more than I expected them too... and I went with high expectations. I still can't work out how you can build brass and n/s locos so small yet get them run so smoothly, outside cylinders and all. Spells instead of solder is probably the answer.

Long chats with several WT members, mostly while watching trains go by on Heyside which definitely pipped Bucks Hill for me, despite Paul Bambrick's stunning backscene. In fact I found myself far more interested in the scenery on BH than the trains themselves. Heyside just oozed atmosphere. One thing I noticed was that the sound on both BH and Heyside was set to near-perfect levels for an exhibition - audible while standing and watching the layout, but impossible to hear just a few steps away from the barriers.

Only one buy this time - a Midland D.397 horsebox from Dragon. Time to sharpen the bowpen!

Hi

Some more pics from Aylesbury.

Heyside in all its glory, blinking in the daylight

And a view not seen before

P1010461a.jpg

Next door to us was one of the very best models I have ever seen, the interior of a lumber mill...

P1010472b.jpg

Quite exceptional and worthy of the highest accolades. The bloke who built this is responsible for the layouts at the Utrecht ontraXS show, and Heyside received a formal invite to attend on Saturday evening. Once he realised that we had a native Dutch speaker amongst our group, we had the hard sell on Sunday!

Cheers

All the layouts that had sound you could only hear them when close to them but never across the hall, many good layouts in the show, I spent most of my time looking to find that extra hidden item in the scenery thats normally missed by others, during the weekend there were not many hands from above sorting out derailments, maybe more layouts should have a breakdown crane available.
