They are so near to perfect, and yet, so far..... :headbang:
Its a shame isnt it?! I dont understand how they could get such a fundamental aspect wrong, unless its something to do with the moulding process?

Neither do I, but unfortunately Heljan have a lot of 'form' with this sort of thing, especially in 4mm. They're not the only manufacturer to make mistakes, of course, but you'd think when they are really leading the way with RTR O scale they'd try just that little bit harder...

 So would you say the main problems are the tumble home & window frame issues ?, this is the first Blue/Grey one I have seen & I have to say it doesn't look too bad, I know it's not perfect but if they were discounted to a more favourable price in a few months time ....I might be tempted :?

Yes, it's the body profile. Anything else can/could be corrected. Having said that I'm sure a rake of a dozen would look pretty good in action and the issue wouldn't be noticeable.
To me it highlights the difference between looking at a item of rolling stock in isolation and not as part of a greater whole. It's like the JLTRT wagons - the solebar is a shocker viewed in isolation on one model, but if it was viewed as part of a train on a layout it wouldn't seem obvious.
I build individual items of rolling stock, so these things matter to me, but if I was building a large layout then I would get over it!

Personally I dont think they look that bad and yes I agree when seen in a rake being pulled by a loco would look sweet but the price is a little prohibitive, I wonder what they would look like next to other manufacturers coaches thats when the real differences would come to light. Still worth drooling over and when I win the lottery

I think given time some hefty discounts may appear on these coaches Ian, when you think that the locos in the Heljan range have a RRP of ?525 & some class's are available for around ?300 at some box shifters.....we shall see ;)

Maybe the trick would be to keep them as a separate rake...? Then see if anyone noticed anything..?

I would use them in a mixed rake of MK1's & Mk11's, but not at the present price, I would rather go for MK1 kits or S/H Bachmann brass MK1's ;)

Bachman brass are just as pricey but much more for your money

I've seen a few nicely finished ones for around ?150, but even around the same price I would rather have a brass coach, with a few minor details, they can be made into really nice MK1's IMO, going even further off topic (no change there  ) , are Bachmann definitely dropping there RTR brass range?
