Hi Ian,

thankfully, the curtains were plain orange in service, certainly not going to go for this delicate shade:eek:

as preserved by PW at Bury.

Hi Phil,

thanks for the photo, but I think that I am 'saved by the bell' in as much as I'm pretty sure now that in later service, a much less ornate cloth would have been used. This pattern would hark back to the first class area when the coach was a restaurant car - and rule 1 will be brought into play use:thumbs:

cheers

Hi Steve,

many thanks for the photo, I have not seen one of it in Wales before. I have one of DB999509, the Newport CE Saloon taken at Cardiff in July 1988, if you have any other photos of it, they too would be useful as I have one of the Easybuild kits in the 'to do' pile.

cheers

Now that the Q13 & Diag 1/550 are out of the way, it is time to search out another 'shelf queen' so, keeping in the Inspection Saloon mode, I dusted the big white box down and peeped inside to find :eek:

P1000912.JPG

where I had filled in the windows in the redundant double doors, one of the infills has shrunk - a good reason for leaving three years + between the filling and re-opening the box! Not only has there been a slight shrinkage around the edge, the surface has become slightly concave. I think the solution is to scribe around the perimeter and scratch the surface to provide a key for a very fine filler and then a few sessions with 1200 wet and dry and some witness primer. Respraying the area bounded by the windows should be ok and then a keying in at the bottom edges with T-cut should do the trick. I have never painted the sides and ends prior to final assembly before and here is a good enough reason not to do it again at any time in the future. I used JLTRT spray cans and thankfully have a number of cans of both colours in stock.

I have now started to re-read Heather's post on her Collett builds to get me going regarding the underframe. The bogies are complete and ready for the primer to be applied.

What filler did you use, Mike? One of the solvent-based ones I guess. It's one of those jobs where supergluing in a plug and rubbing down or even Milliput would work well.

I hope you manage to patch it in OK.

Hi Steph,

many thanks for your comments. From memory, It would have been Squadron Putty. I'll try with Milliput 'slurry' and let it dry out for a couple of days then sand down and see what's what.

The dust was blown off of the lid of the re-cycled take away box that has been home to the castings, etches and the few made up sub assemblies and work on the underframe was underway after a three year pause and after four hours enjoyable filing, scratching, cursing and gluing:

P1000914.JPG

and constant reference to Heather's essential article on her three Collett builds, this had been achieved. The trusses (they are level and parallel) were already in place, but nothing else. The next thing to tackle will be to finish the brake rigging and then the battery boxes (these were included in the kit) and gas cupboards (not included so will be scratch built) and the buffer beams - basic fabrication already done but buffer housings etc still to do.

The last posting was 20.10.2017, and the mojo along with nearly everything else seems to be returning, so I can at last provide an update - albeit in a 'temporary and trial fit' manner.

Having got over the initial hurdle of getting onto the indoor workbench, with Management's full permission, the sides were glazed using the laser cut panels from the H33 kit and then the (HMRS Pressfix) lining was applied, missing water pipe knobs fitted to the roof and end, the 'tell tale' down conduit removed and replaced to allow for the post painting fitting of the windscreen wipers

There are still numerous little things to do, such as curtains, furniture and transfers etc but I wanted to check the body fit on the chassis and things don't look too bad for a first fit.

Hopefully some further progress photos later in the week.

Thanks Dave,

My house move has put the modelling on hold until my new workshop is ready.

A further setback was a mishap with the lawnmower this week which resulted in surgery to repair a couple of mangled fingers.

It's good to see you back at the workbench Mike.

Rob
Your absence from these pages over the last couple of months has also not gone unnoticed!
Glad to see you posting again too.
Dave

Hi Rob and Dave,

many thanks for your kind comments, I can assure you that I have been here checking posts but just not had the urge to put file onto brass or the like. Rather wait until now when I feel like getting on the bench and hopefully achieve what I want to rather than fill the waste basket with a large amount of broken pieces of expensive kits.

As I said above, hopefully more pictures later in the week.

kind regards

Mike

Hi Rob,

I hope that it's not too long before you get the workshop sorted and the fingers well and truly mended to get you going again. A couple of sheep might be better than getting the mower sorted:)):)):))

kind regards

This week saw the application of the Precision Labels transfers, applied while the ends and sides were still 'in the flat' a first for me and certainly made things a lot easier, thanks to being able to glue the sides to the ends, a benefit over brass kits which cannot be painted etc until everything is soldered together.

P1010434.JPG
the black/gold lining is HMRS Pressfix as previously mentioned and again, the flat application was a real help - especially with my eyes the way they are!
P1010433.JPG
there are small grab handles to be affixed between the door opening and the coach end, straddling the lining at each corner
P1010435.JPG
the roof is still loose fitted at present to allow the placing of the end partitions, followed by the furniture. Also to be done are the final three coats of Johnson's Klear to seal the transfers now that they have had a good time to dry out, water pipes fitted at this end and then a final weathering of the chassis and possibly the roof.

regards

Mike
