Rob P's Silhouette Cameo Cutter Workbench

In between building the Kirk coaches I have also been assembling the other exNBR bogie CCT. This one will be finished in LNER livery for my own stock.

In NBR and LNER days the side panels were all half beaded this has been added using 0.8mm half round Plastruct strip.

Although I will be making the sole bars from plastruct strip they are too long to make it out of one length so it will need to be joined.

In order that this isn't visible on the finished model I plan to draw up and cut some 10 thou overlays. Which I plan to rivet in the same manner as the tar tank. This is in the hope that it will save me from drilling, cutting and inserting the many stubs of rod that would otherwise make up the multitude of bolt/rivet heads visible on the sole bars.

Hi All,

Just a reminder to anyone in the vicinity that I will be demoing Inkscape and Silhouette Cutting at the Stainmore Railway in Kirkby Stephen this coming weekend and I look forward to seeing and having a natter with any one who pays a visit.

The Cameo demo was well received with lot's of interest from both people who had never seen one before and a few people who had machines but hadn't really done much with them.

It must have been viewed as a success because I have been invited to do another demo at next year's show.

In response to a query on the GOG forum I promised that I would take a photo of some Kirk sides that I needed to cut and shut and repair the beading on - The beading is Plastruct 0.8mm half round.

It looks like Ian has now run out of the colour pigment that he used to use to colour the LNER coach pieces because they came in white so I had to give them a quick spray to get them to show anything.

I have marked which beading I replaced with a red square. For some reason the top one picked up some much in the solvent (Limonene) which has made it look a bit ragged in the photo but I am sure that it will disappear once I apply the teak varnish to it.

Although it doesn't look it in the photo the base colour is orange.

Been rereading this thread as I'm thinking of buying a Silhouette Cameo myself. They seem to be selling a Cameo 3 now, does anyone know if there's much difference between a 2 and a 3?

Just reviving this thread because I have just spent a really enjoyable two days demoing my cutter at the Normanton and Pontefract show.

We had lot's of interest throughout the weekend and it was great to put names to faces of fellow forum members, Sean (@The Penguin Of Doom), Rob (@Lord Flashheart), David (@Jinty), Gary (@cmax) plus quite a few guild and RMweb members who may not post on here.

Chris was asked to bring along some paintings and prints today and there was a lot of interest in them too.

Thank you to all who dropped by to say hello, an apologies to anyone who I have missed. It must have been well received by the show organisers because we have been invited back next year to demo again.

The next Silhouette Demo is at the Guild Summer show in Doncaster anyone who is going do please drop by and say hello.

Hi Rob,

Great to meet up with you and Chris yesterday, some fantastic modelling and artwork on display, you are a very talented couple!

Very impressed with the Silhouette cutter, certainly got the grey matter thinking and most of all, got the modelling mojo back again.

Regards,

Gary

Hi Gary,

It was good to meet and chat with you too, I am really pleased to hear that the show restored the mojo. Chris and I are worn out but very satisfied with a very enjoyable weekend.

While cutting some battery box straps for the Kirk Twins I decided to have a dabble with some lettering in styrene. It was brought to mind by Mike Osborne's request for the loco lettering.

Not needing any that said loco specifically I did some potential platform/signal box signage although in hindsight they may be a little on the big side - each letter is 8mm high.

I plan to make a sign board for them but for the purposes of the photo they were placed on my scanner bed back to front to give the following result.

They are cut from 10 thou styrene.

I have just added a further Silhouette Demo to the diary. - The Thirsk show on 29th of July.

If you are in the vicinity do pop along.

A minor set back this week. I spent most of last weekend making a new display stand for use at Donny show. The plan was to fit home made track. I had the rail to hand but sadly turning the house upside down hasn't revealed the safe place where I put the sleepers and chairs after painting/staining them. Grrr!!:headbang:

This thread has been quiet for a while but I have been doing bits and pieces of drawing and one of the items which I have kept returning to and finally made the first test cuts are for a GWR Inspection Saloon.

Many thanks are due to Mike Cole (@Ressaldar ) for the photos that he kindly printed off for me.

Both the photos are of the same pieces because I couldn't work out which photo was the better one (neither are great....).

I have also cut a load of station valencing but I haven't taken any photos of that yet but here is a screen shot of the art work

As seen above, I cut the sides out back in January with the inner sides (6 pieces) being made of 20 thou with a pair of 10 thou overlays for the outer skin.

The 6 inner sections needed all the apputures finished off with a scalpel which has proved a steady and often mind numbing job which has taken place in an odd half an hour here and there. Which to be honest was probably as well.

They are not the easiest of thing to take good photos of being white and they would perhaps have benefited from being primed first but having taken so long to get this far I was eager to share where I had got to.

The intention is to build an inner box a, la, the David Jenkinson method and fit the ends on last.

I readily take on board any new technology in case it might be of use in the railway modelling, but from what I can see of your coach sides, this is a lot of hard work when they could have been etched on 12thou brass.

Hi Larry,

I agree, and to be honest that would have been the next step if I couldn't have made this work.

Hi Larry, you're probably right, but nothing like creating a drawing and within five minutes having the item in your hand. I see the Silhouette cutter as doing the cuts I couldn't do accurately myself. Real modelling if you like with a helping hand.

@Rob Pulham Fantastic modelling. Share more of your work.

Just to show how thick I am, is silhouette cameo cutting similar to laser cutting? I ask because I think the process(s) are ideal for making railway buildings.

is silhouette cameo cutting similar to laser cutting
effectively yes. Silhoutte cutter, routers, cnc mill, laser cutter et al. They all are a computer controlled x-y plotter. The silhouette cutter uses a knife blade to cut, routers and cnc mill use a rotary end mill to cut and a laser cutter funnily enough a laser :D. Each tool has it's benefits depending on the material you are wanting to cut.
