7mm Rob's Rolling Stock Workbench

As I mentioned on one of the other threads I had a bit of a wagon bonanza at Christmas so it would have been rude not to start on one;)

So here is prgreess to date on the LNER 8 Ton refrigerator van

Starting with a couple of what's in the box - pack in this case

and a few more of the sides and ladders. Jim quite nicely gives some etched spacers to hold the ladder frames in position. You just fold them up, solder the rungs then cut out the spacers. i hasten to add that I haven't removed the spacers yet.

Jim also provides some etched door handles that you fold up into a square box and solder in place around the door locking rod. The idea is that once flooded with solder you then file them half round. I didn't fancy the work involved with this so I soldered a small piece of suitable sized tube to the handle instead, removing the rest of the etched fold up bit. As is custom on WT I have made the locking handles so that they move.

Some time ago I picked up a few sets of WEP compensation units so I plan to use one of them on this but I haven't quite worked out how I will achieve that yet.

Of course:p

Well that would be my excuse at any rate - not sure that Chris would go for it though. I am not sure how I managed to get this build past her.

I do like these kits and as mentioned many times before they are a good basis to add detail too. I'll be interested to see this progress Rob, especially what you make of the WEP units. How's progress on the J24

Well I have the wheels for it Mick and when I get paid in January I will be getting the inside motion bit's for both that and the F5. Where it comes from there will depend what takes my fancy after the F5.

One thing about having a kit mountain is that you have lots of choice:D

A little more done tonight and I have to say that I think that this is the best etched wagon kit that I have built to date. It really fits together very nicely without any filing or struggling to get bits to fit.

I took the opportunity last night to solder together all the small parts - brake shoes, levers etc. So now it is just assembling and working out how to fit the compensation units. Jim doesn't provide a floor for this kit just a strip to mount the brake cylinder on so I either put in a complete floor or I add a couple of additional strips to mount the compensation units to.

Hi Rob,

up to your usual high standard. Jim has announced the SR Queen Mary Express Brake van and I think that that will be a stunner.

cheers

Thanks Mike,
I saw it on his site after reading a reference to it some where, possibly RMWeb before Christmas. It does look good and it's nice to know that he is expanding his range now that he has moved.

Despite not being able to move into the workshop I still managed to make progress on the fridge van.

I have completed all the upper works (I think)

As seen in close up below I also added the quite prominent hand rails that are surprisingly missing from the kit or the instructions and drawings/photo that Jim provides. They only seem to feature at the step end and I thought it would be good to try to represent the flattened end where it is bolted to the bodywork (I have attempted to do this on one of the horse boxes by squashing the end of the rod in pliers but I am not that pleased with the result).

I made it from a strip of scrap etch I filed the end round and drilled a hole the same size as the rod that I used for the handrail .7mm I then pressed a rivet between the end and the hole and cut it off through the hole giving me a semi circle to fit around the handrail where it goes through the body I then gripped the rivet in fine tweezers and carefully soldered it in position. I did a smaller piece without the rivet under the bottom to finish it off - verdict very fiddly but well worth it.

While packing stuff up for the move I came across my stock of Scale Hardware and may try another example at some point using a scale hex head stud instead of a rivet. It would make locating it easier as I could solder it in position from the back, keeping the front much cleaner.

Mike,
Yep, saw it at Reading, it looked lovely. I think I'll still be building my Laurie Griffin ones though - for a start they're not the modernised (dual brake etc.) version which is what Jim's planning.

The SR 8' bogies looked very good too - same spec, but less fiddly than the Slater's ones and would hopefully be out in time for when I'm due to start building Bulleid stock

Rob,
Sorry for crashing your thread - I'm very much enjoying watching your builds...

Thanks Alan,
Now we all know how you build kits quicker than most of us.... and you say that you have a kit mountain?
I don't know does this class as a mountain? :)) compared to others it may just be a hill......

Mind you, my wagon pile is not helped by the fact that I got in very quickly when Frank Titcombe died and had all the SR and LMS vans I wanted - some 50 or so.

Well Rob, you beat us on locos and wagons - surprised to see two Duchesses alongside a starter 0-4-0T!!!!!

You shall have to get a move on to catch up with Peter in respect of coaches... 8 GWR clerestories, 6 or so GWR 4-wheelers, 11 GWR Toplights, 5 Gresleys (only in teak)....

I used to have a stash that size, but realising that I would never build them they have been moved on. I'm moving on to the odds n sods heap next :)
