Roger's G1 1/32nd Modelling

As a "quick fill in", and distraction, I've started this Airfix 1/32nd Mk1 Ford Escort. It should make a "nice set of wheels" for the resident diesel fitter at Worcester Road!


The kit has 80 parts and is quite nicely detailed, especially the engine which is made up from 16 parts alone.
The kit is part of the Airfix three car Classic Car Collection, the other two being the Vauxhall Viva HA and Triumph Herald.

And here's the completed Viva.

A bit of progress with the Escort. I managed to spray paint the body in Ford Olympic Blue, a much brighter and more pleasing colour than the Brunswick Green suggested in the instructions.

It was 6 deg C in the shed. A bit of over enthusiastic spraying lead to a "curtain" on the passenger door. Fortunately the excess paint dried out over the course of an hour. Got away with it this time!

A close up of the engine compartment detail. It doesn't look this bad at arms length through fuzzy vision!
A little bit of tidying up is needed I think. With all this detail on show it would be a shame to have the bonnet closed, so I need to look
at making something that resembles hinges. This was supposed to be a quick build without any added detail......!

A bit more progress on the Escort. I now have a rolling chassis and a few more body parts have been spray painted in the shed. This time the temperature was a balmy 12 deg C!



And as if I don't have enough kits to build, this little distraction popped up. My excuse is that it will be another "fill in" build that I can use to practice airbrushing with. And it only cost £1 at the local charity shop.

Hi Rog
The Engine Shed Foreman at Worcester Road told me he is selling his Imp as he getting a MK1 Escort in Ford Olympic Blue! No doubt he will have us cleaning for him when we are on a Sunday turn.

I can't believe it's over two years since I last posted something. Last year I finished constructing my 1/32nd Southern PMV and this week I've started painting my 1/32nd Fred Phipps Warship, D817 Foxhound. Here's a few phots.

Before I started spraying I tried a few practice runs on Mark Smith's spare D6300 body.

Then on to D817 - first off in "milky bar" colour.

Just started with the Halfords white plastic primer. Note the air temperature at 20.9 deg C. I thought this might be a bit too hot, but the primer sprayed on very nicely.

Next job is to mask off the full yellow ends and spray the body maroon.

I was pleasantly surprised how well the spraying went bearing in mind that the Halfords primer was over 10 years old and the Rail Match yellow is 9 years old!!

Hi Rog, terrific I look forward to seeing D817 on Worcester Road this year, however the Swindon Works paint gang seem to be having problems in what colour to paint the D63oo'er! . You painting D817 reminds me that I must finish Tiger off this year.

Hello Steve,

Hopefully Foxhound will see some progress soon.

In the meantime I've done a bit more to the Escort. The rolling chassis can now be "sat in" and the interior of the body
has been painted to loosely resemble the interior of the real thing. By my reckoning there are only 5 more parts or
sub-assemblies to add before the model is finished.



With yesterday's warmer weather, 15-16 deg C in the shed, I sprayed my 21 ton coal hopper in grey primer.

Yes, the coal hopper is the "Iron Road" kit, and yes, Foxhound was D817. I used D816 when setting up my user name on your old Yahoo website. "D817 Foxhound" was already taken in Yahoo, and quite a few other Warship names as well, so I just "mixed and matched" to come up with D816 Foxhound. So it's all your fault!!

The Southern Van was sprayed up in grey primer yesterday using the same cellulose paint that I used on the 21 ton coal hopper. On this occasion the temperature in the shed was a cool 10 deg C. The van did look a bit "rough and ready" in bare brass, but looks quite respectable now. Definitely a case of paint hiding a multitude of sins, or bodges as in this case.

Really like the Escort as I used to have one about 37 years ago. It was a Ford AVO RS2000 version in the same colour but with wide darker blue stripes down the side (of course it did, it was the 1970's). I fitted it with a competition clutch and high ratio steering rack. I seem to remember it went like the clappers but looking at the spec now it only had 100hp and 0-60 was 9 seconds. So it seems my memory is rose tinted but I think it was more to do with the way it was built by the AVO section (twice as many rivets, felt really tight) and the sound of the engine.

Yesterday I finally lost my patience with spray cans and decided that it was about time that I started using my airbrush which had spent
the last 14 years hiding out of sight under my workbench.

After a quick trial run assembling all the bits and pieces, I made a few practice passes on the old D6300 body, then started on the Southern Van proper.



Just started and it already feels much easier than using a spray can.


Just about done and I'm quite pleased how the van has turned out.


Next will be some roof dirt and black chassis and wheels, followed by transfers and weathering.
I'm actually amazed that my first attempt at using an airbrush was trouble free, especially as all the equipment
is at least 10 years old and had not been used at all. The date on the paint tin is 31/08/01!!!

And I can't believe that I put up with spray cans for so long.

That's one impressively large spray booth!

Glad to see it worked out well. I've just done a couple of jobs with spray cans and likewise was less than impressed with the results so I've just dug my compressor out of the shed and bought a new airbrush to go down the same route. Just out of interest whose paint were you using?

Hello Adrian,

Just out of interest whose paint were you using?

The paint is Phoenix Precision and it sprayed very well as a 50/50 mix with pure turpentine ( by Langlow, but no longer obtainable I think).
I'm now going to get some black, and "roof dirt" to complete the southern van, and maroon for D817 and grey for a 21 ton coal hopper. If the weather
holds, the airbrush is going to see a lot of use after 14 years of inactivity!
