S7 wheelsets to F/S

Hi

I have in my possession a fantastic set of Allan Harris wheelsets (engine only) for a L&Y Highflyer. They are unfortunately (for me!) to S7 standards. They are the usual telescopic fitting (screw for bogie and trailing axle) but are all in this case split axle as well.

Now I'm prepared to back myself with my track and point construction and say that I believe that the narrower tread and finer flanges will be OK on Heyside. But, I will have to reduce the gauge.

Does anyone have any experience/ideas as to what may be the best way to go about this?

I don't think the bogie and trailing axles are too great a problem in that the axle shoulder can be turned down down (but how do you mount the wheel in a lathe?), it's the driving axles that I'm struggling with. I did think about applying heat to the split axle insulation to see if I could separate that part of the axle, then reducing the spigot, reassembling the axle in a V block.

Any thoughts? (and 'build it as S7', while crossing my mind, is not helpful!)

Cheers

That's a tricky one! In all cases I think the axle and wheel need to be seperated, I wouldn't try and seperate the split axle It would be unlikely to be concentric on reassembly. It's certainly not mission impossible.
