Scary derailment

Saw the images in my Flickr feed the other day and thoughts went to crew who quite frankly must of .... their pants.

More details are coming out but this live cam caught it happening, the odds of that are slim to say the least, it's as scary as it looks live as it did in the stills

Quite an incident, it was interesting to see that the line was back in action in a couple of days. If you follow the link to the Virtual Railfan Kentucky webcam you will see a couple of the wagon bodies sitting below the bridge. For those who like watching American trains Virtual Railfan has a whole load of webcams, easy to let hours go by watching them:)

I don't think so. While there is a crossover just before the signals, you can see the engines bouncing before they get to it.
Looking, and listening, to where the lead loco de-rails, it does seem to be at the toe of the facing point. The shadow from the trestle support, when compared to the other shadows kind of bears that out too.

Still, when the lead engine does dig in, that rail is bent like spaghetti !

Tim,

I love the whole "...some of the busiest spots on earth" and looking at the list there's Clitheroe ! Hmm, not exactly known as a hub for train movements. :))

Running around the Youtube rabbit holes this one caught my eye, interesting in that it's a trailing dashcam, what starts out as a normal view aft soon changes with rain, then high winds and then when you finally stop, the rest of your train barreling down on you and stacking up against the engines.

An impressive lesson in physics, mass always wins.

I'm impressed with the tank car, sans bogie quite happily being pushed along by the rest of the train.

The tornado derailment one is from 2008, saw that clip some years ago now!!

Still, if you're going to have a derailment, might as well do it properly. :)
The Kansas City one in the OP was discussed in a thread 'Over There', as the recovery was taking place. ;)

Had any similar incidents on your 3rd axis track, Jordan?

Not as bad as that, certainly!!!
As derailments are prototypical, I don't get too hung up about it if/when they happen - although I do investigate why it's happened. Sometimes it's a b-to-b I haven't got quite right.
Had an interesting one the other day - the cause was the coupler cut bar which I'd glued too far under the draftgear box on a covered hopper; it was catching the outer wheelset of one truck & preventing it turning far enough on what are, admitedly, my very tight radius curves. Moved the cut bar to the edge of the box, problem solved. :)
