Steph,

When trying to get to grips with the details of Cl.37 bogies I was made aware of the swapping of bogies between classes 37, 50 and 55... and so I started to try to understand what variants existed. A brief summary of the different bogie types is:-

a) built up / fabricated;
b) cast.

with sub-divisions as:-
a1) headstock style 1;
a2) headstock style 2.

and

b1) no square corners for headstocks;
b2) square corners for one headstock, round corners for other headstock;
b3) square corners for each headstock.

Yes, these are simple descriptions - the descriptions are good enough for anyone who looks at photos to spot the differences. As far as I can tell, there seems to be no "favoured" type for Cl.37 other than for engines in as built condition. Indeed, no. 37 408 seemed to suffer changes in bogie variant / sub-variant every few years from when re-furbished until withdrawal. I started a thread on this subject in the Class 37 interest group of RMWeb,

here:- Class 37/4 thread on RMWeb

where there are contributions from Brian Daniels, Richard Carr and others involved in the maintenance of preserved engines.

JLTRT supplies the Cl.37 with "fabricated" bogies.. if one asks Laurie nicely, he will supply that kit with the complete "cast" bogies from the JLTRT Cl.50 kit. Just do not try to swap the sideframes because there are differences in the manner in which the brake gear is attached to the bogies / sideframes.

Guys,

I'm very pleased to announce that finally(!!), the Blines 13:1 gearbox templates (615kB, pdf) are available.

Please download and print at 100% for your use. Any ideas as to what can go in to fill the small area of blank space would be appreciated...

More info and the Application Note should arrive over the weekend.

It would be nice to see which blank space you are on about as I cant find it on your website.

Ian,

Fair enough! There is a blank space on the planning template sheet that I linked to in my previous post. I'm happy to take suggestions if there is a specific layout that people would like to see included here.

They say the postman only rings twice. In this case he didn't have to...

As you can see the first production etches have arrived. I'm doing a test build this afternoon, but so far we're on track. Just waiting for notice of the gears before I'll be able to ship the early orders out. Pricing info should be available shortly.

Here's a couple of views of the complete kits, firstly the motor-mounted 'Power' version (fixings for Mashima 14xx, 16xx and 18xx series as well as Canon 1833. For those with more exotic tastes there are fixings at ANSI standards (12mm centres, M2) so a variety of Maxon, Faulhaber, Escap etc. motors will fit without modification.):

And here's the individual axle drive 'Remote' version:

As of this moment, I'm happy to take any further expressions of interest. Of course, there's no obligation at this stage in the proceedings...

The first production-standard 'boxes have now been put together and I'm very pleased with the way they're come out. Not only do they look as neat as I'd hoped, they seem to work well too.

Here's the 'power' version attached to a Mashima 1833, rear shaft shortened and a Branchlines universal joint added:

And the 'remote' version with the other end of universal joint attached:

I'll be wandering round the Alexandra Palace show on Saturday 23/03 and York on Saturday 30/03 with these and a made-up motor bogie (MMP Class 47), so if you happen to be at either of those events and want to have a closer look do stroll up and say hello...!

Graham,

My pleasure! Have you got any of the JLTRT bogie inner frames I could have a squint at for a couple of minutes, if you wouldn't mind taking them? I believe you and Peter are working on a couple of JLTRT locos at the moment?

I'm planning one day to do a V90 or G1206 and that remote gearbox would work a treat to replicate the hydraulic drive and cardan shafts!

Mick,

If you have a look at the planning sheet you'll find drive layouts there which suit Classes 22 and 52, where exactly that approach has been borne in mind. There are some normal powered bogie arrangements included as well...

Steph, a great product and I'm sure I'll be in for a few of these as I build my locos (2x 24, 31, 42 and whatever else I manage to snap up) so I'm watching with interest. I'm also keen on DMU bogies for my Bachmann Derby Lightweight as I can't stand the way the huge motor can be seen through the windows and I can't hide them with convenient toilet or Guards windows.

If you've got not other products to fill the space top right (DMU bogies could be an idea though) how about some identification and contact details. This PDF may be passed around by interested parties and the originating site or telephone number have have been forgotten or not passed on too. You could put a simple logo, website and telephone number up there so there is absolutely no doubt about where this came from and how you can order some.

Hi Steph,
If you wonder down the Quarry about the time for a pint then I am sure that we can help. At the moment we have inners accessable for Cl.37, Cl.50 and Cl52. The JLTRT Cl.37 kit represents an engine with fabricated bogies and the JLTRT Cl.50 kit represents an engine with cast bogies... and the inners are not the same, so you might need to look at both types.

Hi Steph, fellas:)

I have replied to your PM:thumbs:

Looking very nice indeed....also, just wondering, would your gear-boxes suit the MMP 08? (I think that there may be two options for the kit?).

Kind regards,

CME:)
Already on that one LOL, don't think the 13:1 ratio is correct for an 08, will take guidance on that. I'm hoping to mount Stephs gearboxes as a complete underfloor arrangement, but 08 wheel base is shorter than a Co-Co so there may not be space for the motor to sit flat within the inner chassis framework. If the motor will sit below floor this leaves lots of space in the bonnet for weight and a decent speaker and sound box, won't know any of this until after I collect mine from Ally Pally and get home.

Steve,
Point noted - the new version, just uploaded, has a funky little logo and full contact details. For your DMU you can certainly use the gearboxes; have a look at the solutions on the bottom row of the Planning Sheet and see if either of those float your boat - both should be below floor height I think.

Graham,
Many thanks - I'll make sure I see you next Saturday!

Martin,
These gearboxes are not going to be anything like perfect for an 08 really - the ratio is probably a bit too low at 13:1; you'd possibly have the fastest 08 in the world!

JB,
I'll catch up with you on Saturday...!

All,
As well as the updated Planning Sheet, you'll also find that the Application Note has been uploaded. In light of messages here and received off-forum a basic speed table is included, with scale speeds referenced to 3', 3'6" and 4' dia wheels and Mashima 1824, 1833 and Canon 1833 motors. I hope you find it useful!
