I always find that commissions are easier, as you have fewer excuses for not finishing the job, whereas I can procrastinate as much as I like for my own stuff which is not a good thing :headbang:
Good work on the seats anyway  having seen this im wondering if it is the way forward with the Siphon  especially as it has no windows to worry about so the thickness of the sides is not an issue.

Thanks for that Cynric, I have just today received two very nice patterns for the second class seats from Rob so will start work on doing these. If its OK with you I will post up my progress here, I am going to try making more than one mould this time around, I need to have some chance of achieving my production target

As regards a syphon, I would have thought resin casting would be an in ideal medium in which to produce sides, although I would have a problem getting long lengths into the vacuum cylinder. Not the end of the world though as open backed moulds will work quite well without a vacuum.

Have you built an original/pattern yet? As I know that both Steve (Cook) and I are keen on developing some NPCS stock perhaps we could share info and experience and try and do both 7mm and 1/32 versions?

I also really like the short syphons that Harris used and which were associated with the Calne branch, but I guess these were all gone by the time that the diesel hydraulics were operating?

An interesting idea

My pleasure Rob, I'm glad you are happy with them :)

I very much look forward to seeing how you work them in to your Mk 2 coaches

Hi Ian

No, not at all :D

I am slightly overwhelmed by how many of the blighters Rob and Phill need, I'll just need to work out a method where I can cast several at once. Now that I have got the patterns from Rob I think this should be possible, I shall report progress as I make it.

With your coaches I am guessing that it is a project that you have got lined up for the future, given that you are still in the "IK Brunel" department  with your line. If you like I could aim to do you one coaches worth or something in the near future so that you can work out the other bits and methods you will need when you do your "fleet".

We've got to get those passengers down to Withercombe and Water Orton

I was originally going to etch the Siphon G, but the resin looks an appealing option now :D If i were to make a pattern it would be from laser cut plasticard, but it would be dead easy so scale it up to 1/32. I know all the castings etc are readily available in 7mm not so sure about 1/32?
Dont start mixing the resin just yet, it will be a little way off

Have you considered just making replacement sides for the Ian Kirk kit Cynric ?

I will just make sides and ends, as i will want some fancy etched underframe, :D seriously, the idea is that you can do whatever you want with them as we all have different preferences for the running gear

Just a quck note to say that I have not forgotten about the new 2nd class seat moulds but am having a week of other distractions. I should hopefully get back on to the project next week.

I have just encased your seats in rubber

I will demould tomorrow evening and report back. I don't know how well they will come out as the seat "modesty screens" and armrests are very thin, but I am hopeful.

How are your first class passengers - sitting comfortably?

Hi simon will you still cast the seats for me please

Ian

Hi Ian

Yes, no problem, I think Phill was after some too.

The "problem" will be rate of production, given the potentially large numbers required, but I will try and get there.

It will be good to get back into "making things" mode again though and the fact that I am doing it for someone else is an incentive as far as I am concerned.

I am also (at the same time) making a mould for a rather nice GWR "Porters" doorplate as the owner of the original has sold it and needs it back ASAP  hence my return to the shed

Hi Simon, my first class passengers are sitting comfortably. The problem for me is i've only done the half brake first so not many passengers are happy  will have to progress onto the corridor firsts soon  i still owe you for those seats but you said you would cast my second class then add the cost together. Is that still ok ?
i need 150 doubles and 10 singles :| I cant remember did i make a template for the single as well as the double :?
Also Simon , can i re-use my template for you to make a mould so you could cast some more seats at a later date ?

Hi Rob

Yes, that's all fine, no probs.

150 doubles - jeepers, hopefully you won't want them all at once.

Yes you did patterns for a single and a double, I today have cast moulds for both. Your patterns can certainly be used to make another mould at a later date, as can the actual cast resin pieces themselves. In theory you might lose a bit of detail, but the shrinkage is negligible and it works fine for what are essentially "scenic" components.

I'm not going to ask what the total requirements for everyone's 2nd class seats are because the answer will be frighteningly high  .

I'll just get on and make some, will probably make a couple of extra moulds for the double seat to "up production" assuming that everything works out OK when I come to actually cast the finished seats.

I just spoke to John Taylor on the phone and he offered to make me a bigger vacuum chamber into which things like coach sides could be put

Will report back when I've moved on to the next stage - should be quite soon.

Simon
