Prototype Severn & Wye - road over rail bridges.

Dog Star

Western Thunderer
There are just five road over rail bridges on the Severn & Wye Railway... being:-

* Mierystock on the branch from Serridge Jcn. to Upper Lydbrook (stone);
* Dilke on the Mineral Loop near to Lightmoor Colliery (stone);
* Mineral Loop very close to Tuft's Jcn. (girder);
* Milkwall (girder);
* Coleford Jcn. (girder).

Mierystock and Dilke are single arch bridges and form the basis of the bridge at the south end of our layout . These bridges have stone faces and abutments with brick for the arch. As the bridges are "skew" then the brick courses run at an angle to the string course of the abutment... and at right angle to the spandrel... looking something like a corkscrew when the arch is viewed from underneath.

A recent trip to the Forest with Ian Pope as our guide enabled this gallery of details of the prototypes... and shall be used for the detailing of the model. My initial impressions of the these bridges was that the two were "the same"... our site visits showed me that there are differences in the details, such as the string courses at the top of the abutments, the footings for the brick courses above the abutment string courses, the string courses towards the top of the front / back faces of the bridges.

Here are detail photos of Mierystock bridge:-
