Hi Dave,
Excellent thread and thank you for posting. I saw the layout at Railex, and was very impressed with it. It was the way you had so convincingly fit a whole station into a relatively small space. Looking forward to the arrival of MRJ, and seeing the layout again in the, hopefully, not too distant future.
Kevin

Thanks Kevin! I'm glad you enjoyed seeing the layout at Railex, which I thought was a really good show:) The layout is booked to go to the Uckfield show this October, hopefully the show will still be on and things will have settled down to some kind of normality by then! I hope the article in MRJ proves entertaining, Jerry's pictures are excellent!

I had been watching this develop on the other channel. It is so impressive. The track layout flows so nicely.
I did notice the signals have a socket and plug design. Is that your own thing or are they out sourced?

Hi Peter, good to hear from you:) I'm glad you like the flow of the track, one of my main objectives was to build the whole thing on a gentle curve and to try and get that "prototypical flow"

The signal sockets were from a company called Jurrasic Models Jurassic Models - summerlands-chuffer.co.uk They mainly make stuff for 16mm and 7/8ths scale, but include the sockets in their range under "miscellaneous kits" I saw them at a show and thought they looked useful, which indeed they are!:)

I love this layout too. Beautifully designed and executed. A real.inspiration.

And I love it that you're not afraid of colour.

Thanks Paul!:) I'm delighted you like my use of colour, when I started the project I was under the misapprehension that the Edwardian period was fairly drab, a view foisted by looking at so many monochrome images of the era. The more I researched the subject though, the more I realised how wrong this opinion was! The enamel signs of the era were very colourful and appear to adorn more or less every vertical surface:) Ladies clothing was also fairly vibrant and added colour to the scene. The fact that the GWR also painted all the point rodding in a colour they referred to as "Red Torbay bright" in this period also surprised me. The exact shade of red has probably been lost in the mists of time, but it certainly wasn't painted black as I initially presumed:)

WOW, I have just caught up with this and I have to say that it's a fantastic looking layout, I look forward to seeing it in the flesh one day. Great modelling that seems to capture the atmosphere of a bucolic branch line.

Thanks Phil, glad you like the layout:) The phrase “bucolic branch line” certainly sums Sherton Abbas up, not much happens and that’s exactly how I like it!:)

WOW ! I'm certainly not a GWR fan, but you have captured the whole era and the railway beautifully, and a well deserved MRJ front cover to boot.
Most definitely inspirational.
Well done Dave.

Dave,
Great to see you (and Sherton Abbas) here on WT. As you are aware I have followed your progress on "the other channel" for a long time, but it was really nice to re-read (and see images) of the conception through to "complete" layout in a concise form. Congratulations on the MRJ article, it will definitely be another of my "go back to" editions for many years to come - I have lost count of the number of times I've read the Lesser Wenlock article!

It was great to meet you and see Sherton Abbas in the flesh at last years RailEx, and it was somewhat disappointing that Modbury's outing there this year had to be cancelled. Hopefully there will be future chances to see SA out and about when everything calms down.

Stay safe.

Hi Ian, good to hear from you:) It was great meeting up you and I’m glad you enjoyed seeing Sherton in the “flesh!” Modbury is one of those layouts that I’m looking forward to finally seeing for real once the lock down is over. Your 2mm stock is quite remarkable, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching some of the videos you’ve posted. Quite how you paint the coaches is beyond me, it’s bad enough in 7mm!

Sherton’s next outing is at the Uckfield show in October, subject to things getting back to some kind of normality again.

Best wishes and happy modelling!

This really is terrific work. I have just spent my early morning reading the thread and as others have said it is truly inspirational.

Beautiful.

Uckfield you say? Assuming it happens that’s local to me! I couldn’t get near it at Railex last year and then got chatting rather than coming back to see it properly. I’ll look forward to it.

Dave can I ask what you used for signal wire? I recently wrestled with some on my layout and was grateful that I needed very little. You have it looking rather well and I am interested to know how you achieved that.

Hi Adam, yes I really hope the show goes ahead! I’m hoping to combine the weekend with a visit to the Bluebell Railway, somewhere I’ve not been since my student days in London 40 years ago! Hope to see you in October then:)

Hi John, I used a fine elastic thread called EZ line. A tiny dot of cyanoacrylate is all that’s need to hold it in position on the signal posts. I also used it for my fencing and telegraph wires. If you can’t find it online let me know and I’ll post a link to the supplier that I used.
