Small HOe/009 Layout

There was a brief glimpse of this small layout project on the 'Whats on your workbench' and Jordan suggested that it may be of interest so following his prompt I offer a thread on the topic.

I made the board a couple of years ago over the Yule break and played around with some ideas based on a 9mm narrow gauge layout to suit both HOe and 009 scale stock as I have an interest in both scales and a modest collection of stock that has been built up over a number of years.

The interest waned for a while and the board went up in the loft for storage and was then brought out late 2014 after a visit to Wales had seen the purchase of a Minitrains Gmeinder loco and some of the new Peco HOe/009 setrack and a temporary circuit was made up and a few trains run.

It was the purchase of an N gauge set this Yule which I really bought for the Multimaus that saw the board brought out again and I alternated in running sessions between N and HOe/009 but in the end decided to go with the original idea of a narrow gauge roundy to run some of my collection as the mood takes.

Board was a new idea for me as rather than the traditional 2"x 1" frame with solid top I opted for a mdf based construction with a semi open top which was entirely glued together.
Frame depth was dictated by the purchase of a couple of 75mm ish wide strips about 6' long for 50p each from a local diy emporium. The surface was cut from another sheet of bargain material which was part painted/coated but as this was flaking it was very cheap. I scraped the remainder of the paint/coating off and still have a good size piece left for another project.
The other cross-members/framing were cut from various bits of mdf that I had saved from various projects and the square strengtheners were cut from wood that formed part of the packaging of a tumble dryer purchase from a while back.

A overall view shows a simple circuit with a couple of sidings.
Minimum radius is 9" which means that I am limited to the smaller locos and stock but I have enough Minitrains & Roco to use along with a few kits that may get built now that they potentially have somewhere to run.

Part of the board has been dropped to allow a raised trackbed which was intended as a convenient location to take photos. The base has been lined with foamcard although I have yet to decide 100% what this feature may be and if a bridge will be added where I have lined the void beneath the trackbed.

A view of the back of the board shows the construction as described and the wiring in place for connection to the section switches when I decide where the 'panel' will be positioned.

This layout is very much an experiment and I will try a number of techniques that I am unfamiliar with as part of the learning process.

I wanted to have a feed to every piece of track and also to have the soldered feed wires as hidden as possible which I have achieved by soldering to the bottom of the rail and drilling holes beneath the the rail/track before fitting them in place as can be seen below the red marks on the rail in this shot.

I have started to paint the track and once ballasted I think the feeds will be completely hidden which is the aim and whilst painting track should be tedious I am finding it strangely therapeutic. I'll ballast once the painting (and testing) is complete then maybe gently airbrush the track area to tie it all in together.

Above all I am enjoying the process which for me is the point of a hobby.

Well 2016 has been a very challenging and weird year for me with some major events in the 'real world' that almost constitute a complete lifestyle change; I've also had (and I've been stalling it or diverted false attempts) an eventual realization that I'm never going to get to try all the railway projects I once thought I would due to dexterity, time, space or simply changing interests and requirements.

Apart from painting/weathering the track this layout had not progressed past the point seen in the pics above so it along with all my 009 & HOe equipment has been moved on. I've also moved on a lot of other similar 7mm (ish) NG bits such as my O14, O16.5, On30, Oe etc. to thin down my stocks and clear both physical and possibly more importantly (for me) mental space to consider what I will do next.... as frightening as it is to consider given my output of recent years - if that is to be anything at all!

So as I left this layout along with all the other bits in Dorset this morning, I guess this thread is now closed from my perspective and can be deleted if the mods feel it is appropriate.
