There was a brief glimpse of this small layout project on the 'Whats on your workbench' and Jordan suggested that it may be of interest so following his prompt I offer a thread on the topic.
I made the board a couple of years ago over the Yule break and played around with some ideas based on a 9mm narrow gauge layout to suit both HOe and 009 scale stock as I have an interest in both scales and a modest collection of stock that has been built up over a number of years.
The interest waned for a while and the board went up in the loft for storage and was then brought out late 2014 after a visit to Wales had seen the purchase of a Minitrains Gmeinder loco and some of the new Peco HOe/009 setrack and a temporary circuit was made up and a few trains run.
It was the purchase of an N gauge set this Yule which I really bought for the Multimaus that saw the board brought out again and I alternated in running sessions between N and HOe/009 but in the end decided to go with the original idea of a narrow gauge roundy to run some of my collection as the mood takes.
Board was a new idea for me as rather than the traditional 2"x 1" frame with solid top I opted for a mdf based construction with a semi open top which was entirely glued together.
Frame depth was dictated by the purchase of a couple of 75mm ish wide strips about 6' long for 50p each from a local diy emporium. The surface was cut from another sheet of bargain material which was part painted/coated but as this was flaking it was very cheap. I scraped the remainder of the paint/coating off and still have a good size piece left for another project.
The other cross-members/framing were cut from various bits of mdf that I had saved from various projects and the square strengtheners were cut from wood that formed part of the packaging of a tumble dryer purchase from a while back.
A overall view shows a simple circuit with a couple of sidings.
Minimum radius is 9" which means that I am limited to the smaller locos and stock but I have enough Minitrains & Roco to use along with a few kits that may get built now that they potentially have somewhere to run.
Part of the board has been dropped to allow a raised trackbed which was intended as a convenient location to take photos. The base has been lined with foamcard although I have yet to decide 100% what this feature may be and if a bridge will be added where I have lined the void beneath the trackbed.
A view of the back of the board shows the construction as described and the wiring in place for connection to the section switches when I decide where the 'panel' will be positioned.
