There is an software update for Facebook and Twitter integration, does anybody want them applied, and would anybody use them?

Lets not get all techno geeky please!!!!!!!! Twatter and fleecebox has caused loads of trouble and with a link to a totally inappropriate and unwanted medium I think it would have a detrimental effect on an otherwise almost perfect site (washing machines and tea urns excluded)

lets not become the other place Mk2 please

Can't say I'd be in favour of this either. Lots of downs so far, but what are the upsides, if any?

The advantages very much depend on the user having a circle of friends on either service, but the buttons enable you to 'like' on your Facebook or twitter feed. The benefit of this is that raises the site profile and alerts your friends to content that you like. Obviously this only works if you have like minded friends on Facebook or twitter! I have accounts on both, but I rarely use them.

It sounds like a 'no' then. .......... Hurrah

I have no accounts on either Facebook or Twatter so see no real benefit to me. If it benefits the forum in some way I'd have no problem with it - but I thought we were already a circle of friends that can keep in touch, update and 'like' each others work, we just do it here :D

I am reliably told that forum software is dead and Facebook is the future
Applying the patch makes no odds either way to me, but seeing as nobody uses either it seems pointless:)) I am a bit suprised at the hostility, as really it is just social media the same as a forum, just a bunch of people expressing their point of view......

I'd love to know where that came from:)

I wouldnt say I'm hostile as such, but perhaps that's a bit of a broad comparison? Lowest common multiple/highest common denominator maybe, that sort of thing?

Cynric in the context of this forum the amount of leg pulling and sarcasm that goes on keeps it a well balanced and mighty friendly place to be, I have seen people fall out over comments made on face book and people completely divorced from the conversation in progress try and assassinate and victimize the op. I have to sign a deceleration that I will not involve anyone or who I work for as Facebook has become a major thorn in my employers side leading to a sacking and various disciplines not something I personally want in my private social life

Cynric,
I personally think you should keep the forum as it is.
There is a common cause running through every posting, even though we digress sometimes, we are all modellers, the exchange of tips and wrinkles is what it is all about. All the modelling photo's give people like me something to aim at.
My wife is an occasional user of facebook and she is always complaining about the amount of garbage that is posted.

Im not about to make any changes it just adds a Facebook and Twitter 'like' at the bottom of a post, but as nobody uses either it is not worth doing.

That says something about the people making comments doesnt it?

As I said given the response I wont be ticking to box to make the activate the feature :))

I have set a Facebook account up for the shop (and myself) and it has picked up a few "likes" although I'm not convinced it really adds much to the shop side of things.

On the other hand it is very popular at the moment and with younger people, so perhaps it will become more relevant as time goes on?

An aspect I'm less keen on is that if you "integrate" it into your web you end up with all their corporate branding, which alters the look and feel of your web site. To be fair, having (eventually) found my settings page I have managed to turn off all the infuriating e-mail notifications.

I think I will probably make it more visible on/from my website although George's new development whereby all books in the shop are now viewable online is driving online orders up anyway.

As Steve alludes to above, I suspect that in some respects I use this place in the same way as facebookers use facebook. In terms of the more general (UK) model railway hobby then RMweb is clearly the desination of choice for most and has clearly grown into a major internet "brand". It will be interesting to see how that develops and changes.

Simon, good move for the shop. If someone likes it, it becomes visible to their friends and you get free marketing. where it falls down is the assumption that your friends are actually interested in a book on the Little Snoring branch in the 1840's :) technically it is viral marketing and that is what excites large companies over social media. If I ever do online ordering for Mek holders ( :)) ) then I will integrate Facebook and Twitter, because being a bit younger on average the military chaps make more use of it.

Thanks for that Cynric, in that case I'll persevere. I need in any event to add some slightly "bloggish" element to my re-vamped site so that I can mention new titles etc, all of which now appear on the database driven side of the site much more quickly than they ever did before. I guess I could add the facebook link from this new page to limit its stylistic impact on everything else.

I'll definitely "like" your Mek holders:thumbs:

Funny day of strong light and heavy showers here today. We have just repaired a puncture and I think Harry and I are about to go out on a bike ride along the canal towpath, could do with a blast of fresh air!

I think this would be the root of my scepticism (albeit more in a personal sense than Simon's business-related example), and why I dont use the options on my Wordpress site. I'm a *very* occasional user of FB, such as commenting on family photos etc, but I dont see it as a networking tool for my hobby interests; although there are other modellers on my 'friends list', the two things are pretty much separate.
