Solder Mask

I wish I'd checked this site earlier this afternoon.....

I needed my solder mask this afternoon but found that it had gone sort of cakey - anyway, it needed letting down with something. I managed to make it work OK (pictures and description in my next post) but I need to check what to use to soften it a bit more - I'm sure this has been discussed previously but I can't find the link.

While looking I chanced upon Dog Star's suggestion of permanent marker ink and Steph's of Tippex. I have the former but not the latter, which I could have purchased last weekend at a "special offer" price if I'd remembered what I may need it for. Anyway, these may have given me alternatives.

Nonetheless, advice on how to make my Solder Mask usable again will be appreciated,.

Chemical blackening also stops solder, works well on threads and pivots etc., sorry not sure what you'd use to restore solder mask , never used it to be honest.

Hi Col.

Yes, I have used chemical blackening too. However, solder mask can be convenient as it's immediately available.

If the solder mask is not recoverable I can always buy some more. Seems a shame to throw away a pot with only tiny proportion used.

Ah, Simon, now I'm prompted I'm pretty sure IPA was a suggested dilution medium.

Thanks for your comment about marking blue. I didn't know this, and threw a bottle away a while back! (Or did I give it to Steph???????)

I don't think I've got it, I use permanent marker these days...

I've not found either layout blue or permanent marker to work particularly well as a solder mask but I suspect that has more to do with the flux I use (Baker's) rather than anything else.
