Solder Paste

I took a punt on some solder paste from Ebay which is considerably cheaper than the "No Clean" syringes which have been available from some UK model railway suppliers for a few years now. I've been using it for the last day or two and it works very well.

I got mine from a UK supplier because I wanted to get it fairly quickly so I had to pay a bit more for it

MECHANIC MCN-300 Liquid Solder Paste BGA SMD SMT Sn63/Pb37 leaded.

...although I note that his price has gone up by £2 since the beginning of the week. :(

However, if you want to wait a bit longer, you can get it from the Far East for a lot less.

...although this advert doesn't state how much is in the jar - the one from the UK source holds 42gm.

It is the "usual" 60/40 tin/lead mix with a small amount of silver added so it does run well when molten. The paste is quite soft and I am applying it with a cocktail stick but it might be possible to decant it into a syringe. I'm storing it in the fridge to get the longest shelf life but I suspect that I will never be doing enough soldering with it to use it all before it goes too hard to use properly. :) I've been finding that I've been tending to use too much paste if I want a nice clean join with no excess solder around it so I suspect that I'll be using even less. :) I've been using it with my RSU but I expect it to work equally well with the soldering iron.

Jim.

I've been buying this stuff from China off ebay for a couple of years but have noticed that once opened it starts to dry out quite quickly. But the price is good and it seems to work ok, so I just keep stirring in some Powerflow flux. Had a jar of Carr's 188 which went completely solid and couldn't even break it up with a screwdriver. Has anybody successfully rescued something in this situation?
