This is great stuff. Thanks I now have a starting point and I take the point about the size of trains most people can run but I think the chose should be yours. I wanted to build a Bournemouth set but there's a car missing because its a shorter coach and you cant use the std parts that the company has. The big thing for me is that etched coaches look to flat and by that I mean thin. Be it wood or metal all coaches have body frames that the skin is fitted to and although the skid is thin the frames are not. I've been doing coach kits in 4mm, 10mm and 7mm for over 40 years and there some fantastic models out there it's always bugged me they never quite catch the look of weight and bulk. I had over 200 Mk1,2 and 3 as well as a few old wooden bodied coaches on the network. I think we rebuilt most of the one's still running on the steam sets we also did some interesting mods. We can only get it right if we work together. There are some great model coach builders out there. If we work together then may be we can all get what we want.

Hi Pete,

What missing coach type are you referring to?

The Bomo 6 sets Steph meant are ten 6 sets 290-300 consisting of five coach types:

SOBT dia 2123 (2)
CK dia 2318
TO dia 2017
KT dia 2660
RF dia 2507

These are all 63' 5' (standard underframe), the Brakes & compo being the same as 3 sets 770-93 - except for the lower skirt, the Thirds similar to 1462-1506, no skirt & with deep vent windows (but note Stephs comment on glazing), unfortunately from the kit manufactures point of view the catering coaches are unique to these sets (and apart from the Tavern sets, the only loco hauled Bullied catering coaches) but from the kit point of view no different from doing MK1s

I have spoken with Mike King so will start to pull things together. Thanks for all your help will keep you in the loop. It will take a bit of time to pull together and it will be next year before you see kits but I should be able to show some stuff when we start the 3D work.

Andy I didn't see that there's a 2017 kit did I miss it! I did think it strange but that's what Slater's did at first they now do the missing one.

Pete

I mentioned your future kits down the club last night, the Slaters kit was mentioned by a few, some members are scratch building coaches to fit the gap with the aid of our laser cutter, some are wondering how long until you bring these kits out, Yes our Okehampton is a couple of years away until its completed, we will be watch your progress.

The major gap in Slaters range was the 6-compartment brake third. That was released last year so it's now possible to model complete sets from Slaters kits.
The next obvious gap is one of the open third loose stock carriages that were frequently used to strengthen sets.
Need to be thinking in terms of sets not individual vehicles...!

Would be nice if Pullman cars were produced for such trains as the Bournemouth Belle, Thanet Belle, Golden Arrow or ACE

Alan
....Queen of Scots, Master Cutler, Yorkshire Pullman, Tess Tyne Pullman etc, many coaches moved across regions, especially Pullmans, I've got some average K stock drawings and had mused scratch building, but moderately priced RTR or kits of these would be welcome.

I'm being a bit irrelevant here, but just saying none the less ;)

Well the posts here are all about Bulleid coaches so there is the tie in. I am not hijacking the thread though!
Considering the train they mostly ran on was the GA its a shame that the U type cars such as Carina, Aries and Car 303 running on Gresley bogies have never been modelled. These were the last traditional Pullmans built in early 1950s and before the ones based on Mk 1's were introduced.

I know the MK1 based mainline units very well - the 4CIGs, CEPs, and VEPs. Penty of detail difference knowledge, pics and dimensions.

Give a shout if that's what's needed.

Steve interesting comment. What curved windows ! do you mean the Mk1s ? What Bullieds are there out there because I've just done two and the windows are the last thing to worry about. The shape is wrong for a start. That's a poor place to start from and we wont talk about the roof. Dan when Easy Build did the 117 that stopped us in our tracks. First thing is there is no market in coaches most people don't care if its got wheels and windows then its a coach. I stated with coaches back in 1970 GWR 70ft along with John Lewis and David Geen when I made kits for Pendon. I try to get my coach kits as close as I can at a price that get me some money back on what it coast. I have to say when I ring Laure and start talking about coaches he goes deaf as he know there's lots of work for him with little sales. Here's some facts we don't sale First, Full Brakes, Kitchen or Dining cars. So what do you do Thirds, Brake Thirds and Comps ! That's not like any train that I went on. Its about space and also the Hornby effect and guess what they always did yep you got it. So I have to approach it as there for Leamington and if any one wont one fantastic.

Pete
The Bullied coaches with 10 1/4 inch depth vents had curved glass in the main window below the vents. Later builds had the vents changed to 15 inches and the main windows had flat ( plane) glass in the main windows. This idea was used in the BR Mark 1 which never had curved glass as far as I know.
The Southern and BR(S) ran plenty of fixed 3 coach sets BSK CK BSK so your brake thirds and composites would cover a lot of prototypical southern trains.

Ok thanks for that Patrick I thought I'd missed something on the Mk1s. I could do the bullied window as an injection but I think the cost would stop us. To make the bolster to inject the windows would be about 1k each per window type, then you have to make them. We can do this but it cost another £500 to get a set and then that's if you do a large amount. then you ask the question 10 1/4 inch or 15 inch. We find that our sales tend to be BR. So you can see the problems we face. But I will work on it I have a bit of a plan. I think!

Pete,
I'd need to check, but think there are only two, maybe three window sizes that are curved for all the Bulleid vehicles.
BRCW-built carriages also had flat windows, so you've got a few to choose from if you decide to go for flat glazing.
You'll just be missing out on the distinctive Bulleid carriages that haven't been done properly yet.

Patrick,
Are you sure the deep vent sidelights are flat? I've had a good look for pics on the VCTs 'site and they look flush/curved to me in their various close ups...
