Rob, very nice photos of an interesting vehicle. The wagon might be described as a tool van now, what was the style or purpose of the wagon when first built?

More pleasure at Stainmore this weekend:).
We called on Saturday to drop off some of Chris's prints which they have agreed to put on sale. While there I was offered a driver for a fiver experience.

Not only was it the first/only time I have driven a loco but it's the first time that I have been in the cab/foot plate too.

Chris came along for the ride and took some photos and videos. I will upload the photos tomorrow but here are the videos to be going on with.

The first is going up the line

The second is going back towards the station.

While I was at Stainmore Railway I took a few more photos of their stock.

Inside a Mark I brake compartment.

This is the other side of the NER Tool van which had changed positions since I last went.

This side seems to have it's truss rods in place, I wonder what happened to those from the other side...

I also have a few shots of the inside of the cab on the Yorkshire Engine co Shunter if they are of interest?

Looks like some one has tried to open or close the guards door with the door lock in the closed position looking at the damage to the woodwork!

A return visit to Kirkby Stephen on Saturday took me on my first steam footplate ride.

Sadly just before we set off the the heavens opened and I got soaked to the skin. As always Chris was on hand to record the occasion for posterity.... not that you can see me.

But here I am grinning like a Cheshire cat:cool:

Thankfully the sun came out for the rest of our visit.

Just to update people on this little gem - they have just secured the turntable at the south end of Darlington Station from Network Rail. If you havn't noticed it don't worry, it's not your eyes - it is buried. Knowing Mike Thompson and the lads it will not take long for them to dig that out when they are ready.

This, alongside the new shed they are building for 65033 and the other improvements, means that this little line needs to be watched closely.

Hi Graham,

My apologies, I missed this when you posted it way back in 2015. I was talking to Rob (yes another one:rolleyes:) one of the guys who is leading the restoration of the tool van and he said that it was always a tool/stores van. It had a birdcage in the centre and one end is heavy Fox heavy bogie, apparently because that end had an Oil tank inside to supply oil to the various sheds/stations etc. the other end has the standard light version. I must admit from looking at them now I couldn't tell the difference even when he had pointed out.

He has managed to obtain drawings for it from the NRM and he gave me the drawing numbers so that I could have a go at building one using the Silhouette but I have misplaced the paper that I wrote it on so I will have to ask again when I see him next.

We paid another visit to the Stainmore Railway on Saturday and things they are a changing.

Late last year they were given the turntable from Darlington Station, they wasted no time in getting their hands on it. Because it was effectively buried in rubbish it has helped it's state of preservation tremendously. One of those rare instances where neglect has has saved it rather than helped it on it's way to destruction.

They have also managed to get the water crane erected ready to dispense water from the new water tank.

The various endeavours have also meant that they have moved some of the stock around which enabled me to get some detail shots of the LNER 3 compartment brake first and it's underframe detail which I will post in a separate thread in the gallery.

They hope to be running steam hauled trains during each day and the 'Driver for a Fiver' will be available to give people a chance to drive 'Stanton 50' (conditions apply).

Your's truly will be doing an Inkscape/Silhouette Cutter demo too.

Although we have known for a while we were sworn to secrecy due to the impending election and Purdah. But now that it's been officially announced I can share the good news here.

The Locomotive Conservation and Learning Trust in partnership with the Stainmore Railway have just been awarded a lottery grant of £941,000 to restore the J21 605033 to steam (currently located at Locomotion in Shildon) and the former NER Stores van that is in residence at Kirkby Stephen East which is to be outwardly restored and internally to be fitted out as a learning resource.

The current estimate is that it will take 2 years from the award of the contract to whoever is chosen to carry out the restoration work for it to be back in steam and working for a living again.

Although not particularly an NER enthusiast I'm delighted to see that 65033 will be back in steam after years in the wilderness. I saw it when just withdrawn at Darlington Works, alongside 65099 (as some on this site will remember from photos I've posted), and again several times at Beamish.
