"Steam on the Cambrian" My new "Modular" Layout.

Preamble
Hello again everyone, I rejoined this august forum again after a long absence due to a number of things (Don't ask!) and while I have been away from this place quite a lot has happened.
some may remember my old layout "Pen Y Bont", well that has now gone to a good home to make room for my new project. ( Pen Y Bont is now owned by fellow new member here "Western age")
When I decided to build this new layout I wanted to do something different, something a bit better than my previous work. Weather I have succeeded or failed will depend on the reaction of people on this forum. I know that this forum is host to some of the Uk's finest railway modellers so, I sink or swim by your comments or lack of!

Well that's the "waffle" out of the way so allow me to introduce "Steam on the Cambrian"
I've always modelled the steam era on the Cambrian section of BR so I was not going to change direction now. But what should I do next? there is so much I wanted to include on the new layout that to do anyone thing would mean missing out something else.
So, I came up with this "modular concept"
The layout (At the moment) consists of two scenic boards 4ft long each board being a "mini layout" in it's own right. but by joining the boards together I could create one larger layout of several different scenes of the Cambrian coast line. maybe the diagram below may help explain what I mean.

The boards built so far are Penmaenpool MPD and Morfa Bach plus one fiddle yard. The left hand side fiddle yard has yet to be made.
The boxes labeled module 3 & Module 4 are future extensions. the scene on these is yet to be decided but at least one will contain a passing loop.
Being modular and being able to add or take out sections of layout will give exhibition managers the choice of layout size too. the minimum size would be 2 modules and two fiddle yards but extra 4ft sections can be added if room allows. Totally flexible- Simple!

OK so for my first post I have gone on a bit but I thought this project needed a decent introduction, and just for those of us who like pictures here's a couple of shots of work so far, one from each completed module.

Morfa Bach, 3200 runs over the timber trestle bridge light engine.

4566 waits for the advance starter to drop along side Penmaenpool MPD.

More details about "Steam on the Cambrian" soon if wanted.

Cheers!
Frank

Oh, I forgot to mention, scale is 4mm 00 gauge using C&L track and hand made turnouts.

Hi Frank,

Great to see SotC once more.

Be good to see some more photos too especially of a Manor. I believe they were popular locos on the Cambrian lines once ;)

Cheers,

Mark

First of all thanks for all the kind comments and encouragement.
Mark, you wanted to see a Manor, well I have a couple some where but they were taken early on in the build.

This picture shows the train leaving Morfa tunnel which is the scenic break between the two modules built so far.

AND just for MTH, Here's a closer look at that welltrol.

There's an amusing story about the above wagon and it's load that I will pass on in my next post.

Cheers for now

Ok Here's the story...
I exhibited Pen Y Bont at Midland Railex last August. Amongst the usual rivet counters and pedants was this guy who looked like he had been dragged though a hedge backwards, (Thank the lord for air freshener).
He proceeded to tell me in no uncertain terms that this wagon would never carry such a load as the floor would not stand the weight of the load. I tried to explain that I had photographs of the same sort of vehicle carrying such a load, albeit one of the Vale of Rheidol engines. But he was having none of it and eventually he and the odour slowly disappeared.
a few weeks later I was exhibiting at Redditch, when, believe it or not the same guy turned up! (same looks, same clothes, same smell) He was peering at something on the layout, I'm not sure what exactly, but I must have got the timing just right because as his nose was only six inches from the track I shunted the very same wagon from the fiddle yard straight under his nose!
He looked up, muttered something and walked away. It made my day worth while just to see the look on his face.

Cheers!

BURNING BRAKES!

One of the dominant features of my previous layout Pen Y Bont, was a burnt out brake van.
This item was always an item of great interest when I took the layout to exhibitions, the number of people who took pictures of it was amazing. Thing is though I have never seen any published on the 'net!

Anyway, the burnt out brake was not sold with the layout and has found a new home on Morfa Bach to "Rust in peace"

Parked in the disused balast/PW siding one of my favourite features lives on!

A box of matches........................................... :)

Many a true word spoken in jest!
The job does actually involve the use of match sticks! I promise to upload the construction details here soon as I have found the pictures I took of the thing being built!

A bit more progress made this weekend!
Flaming June has arrived at last! and with fine weather instead of lighting up the bar-B-Q I get out the saw bench for some serious "wood butchering"

With a deadline of September 28th looming I need to get the layout finished and presentable, I also need some sort of layout lighting.
So I came up with this idea.

8916548832_32e394a66a_o.jpg

I got the idea from a fish aquarium I used to have with a lift up hood.
The pictures show the hood raised for showing, the hood folds down and locks into position as a lid for transport.
The hood can be removed in seconds to enable work to be done on the module and to aid photography.
The gap between hood and back scene will eventually be filled with a removable "sky"
Under the hood are three x 15W low energy light bulbs which I am experimenting with, the use of which was inspired by Chris Nevard who uses something similar.
You can also see on the pictures the "top section" of framing which will eventually surround the module.

I am also seriously considering moving the switch panel from the back to the front so I can operate the layout from the front at shows. Giving me more chance to chat to the punters.
Just another module to do the same thing to, one fiddle yard to build and extensions for those trestles to make!
More soon

Lovely looking layout Dukedog (perfectly captures the Cambrian) and I've gotta say I'm coming around to this operating from the front biz too.......
The only downsize is I wouldn't be able to conceal the packet of biscuits and get to them easily:(
Will look out for the layout on the circuit.
