Talerddig Mk ll: finally some fact instead of a lot of fiction

Very neatly done, Matt. I have to admit that I didn’t notice your ‘infilled’ lintels until you mentioned them.

Your down spout and brackets look the part too.

Very good.

A very pleasant afternoon has been spent applying self adhesive slates to the roof. Ridges have been done with Tamiya masking tape, time will tell how robust this'll end up being...

If you have any really thin superglue try soaking a few drops into the tape. That should bond it for good. I also soak the really thin superglue into the edges around the gutter line to stiffen up the tiles and help them stop getting bent and damaged. Has to be thin enough superglue to soak in rather than sit on the surface though.

Thanks for the comments!

Chris: I've actually sealed the tape with Superglue last night - I remembered that was a step you took with your buildings. Time will tell if it works long term but I used tape to represent some ribbing on the roof of some stock and it's still there about 2 years later so fingers crossed...

So far, everything I've done is a figment of my imagination. My layout bears no resemblance to the real Talerddig, past or present.

This is about to change however, with the construction of a signal box, which will be based on the real Talerddig box. It closed in 1988, so is well within the time period represented by the layout.

I said based on the real thing, because I'm not going to copy the windows because a) I don't really like them so I'm going to make them more uniform, and therefore simpler to make and b) my model will have a slate roof.

Here's a photo of the prototype:

Thanks for looking

Good start, Matt, and good choice of box.

Please forgive me for mentioning my current project again but I only do so because it’s the reason I’ve also developed an interest in this box. I discovered it quite by chance whilst researching Welsh signal box designs, and it rather appealed in the first instance because the square locking room window with its accompanying stone lintel made a refreshing change from the ubiquitous arched type. Additionally, I loved the orange bricked ramshackle shed alongside it :)

I agree about the windows (on some photos it appears to have secondary glazing). I prefer the three panel (later?) design windows myself. If you’re making your own, good luck, but the locking room window looks great!

Thanks Jonte,

It's quite an appealing looking box isn't it? I also liked the locking room window and brick building alongside.

My locking room window is again from Brassmasters but I'll be making the upper windows myself to 9 panel design, much like the end window in the brick shed. I'm doing this for no reason other than I've already made some for an abandoned project. I'm also electing for a slate roof to match the station building.

Here's another shot of the real thing, but from the other side:

Like me, you seem easily distracted, Matt ;)

Jonte

Yep, very easily distracted Jonte. It's all good though.

So, signal box progress:

It's not quite right dimension wise but this is as a result of me choosing to use bigger windows. The knock on effect being that the hut appears slightly too high against the side windows of the box. I will press on regardless!

I hope you'll agree that it at least captures the feel of the original?

Instantly recognisable, Matt.

You’ve captured the spirit of Talerddig box nicely, despite your concern about the fluid proportions.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the enforced discrepancy; it all depends on the camera angle anyway ;)

The slates look well too.

Thanks Jonte, I find applying these self adhesive slates quite theraputic...mind you, I've only done small roofs (rooves?) so far!
