Talerddig Mk ll: finally some fact instead of a lot of fiction

Thanks both for your kind comments.

To illustrate my comments about my uncertainty with the SE Finecast flushglazing here are some pics. While they certainly look better than the original Lima glazing, I still can't decide if I like it or not.

Note I have "opened" the two door windows to try and bring a bit of "life". I had a go at cutting my own glazing yesterday as a comparison but gave up after one piece...maybe that's my answer right there!

And finally a shot of my small parcels fleet together. I think I may have to repaint the Southern CCT in a bluer shade!

Why not keep the SR green livery with a bit more weathering if necessary. It makes a good contrast & I'm sure it was not a great priority for BR to repaint all such vehicles blue.

Hi chaps,

Next random rolling stock project!

I picked up this ancient Triang crane recently and am going to attempt to tart it up.

The jib was beyond repair so I'll have to rebuild it from plastic sheet and strip to the correct width.

Most of the time so far has been spent disassembling and removing parts for replacement. I've got a rather nice set which includes etched pulleys, one of which is visible in the photo, and a cast counterweight.

It's in the middle of being hacked about hence the plastic dust everywhere!

After some contemplation, it became clear that I'd miscalculated the width at the hook end. I tried to ignore it for a few days and convince myself it didn't bother me...but it did!

Cue some nervous disassembly and equally nervous reassembly and it's looking better to my eye at least. I've reduced the width at the hook end by about 3mm and although it's probably not apparent in the photo, I'm much happier with things.

Chapeau! Great work and well-done for contemplating it, more so for actually acting on the idea. I reckon you're moving quite quickly - little and often is the way for these things, I've found (my bench is strewn with the debris of lining transfers right now in testament to this maxim...).

I've also started work on the, the...back bit...not sure what it's called!

The counter weight is a rather nice resin item that's been grafted onto the existing frame with a few additions to replace bits I'd chopped off.

The square with a 'O' is to cover the rather large hole that was left after dismantling the inner workings of the Triang crane. The 'O' will be filled and have a few bolt heads added in due course.

And here's both parts posed together temporarily:

Hello all,

Progress has been slow recently but an hour or so's work last night enabled me to fashion the main drum/reel (?) from rod and some circles cut from plastic sheet.

Comparing this to photos of the real thing show there should be a gap between the ends and the frame at each side. Because I didn't want to drill out the sides and insert an axle, I found mounting it too fragile and fiddly so resorted to making it fit the framework.

I've found some really useful photos online this morning that'll help with some of the details and enable me to finish the jib.

Thanks for looking

Hi all,

Another weekend, another tiny bit of progress. From looking at prototype pictures, it's clear there are a lot of gears and bits and bobs that fill the lower half of the structure. I've started making a representation of these from various bits - no attempt at accuracy, just to fill the space.

Hi all,

I've not made any progress recently because work + baby = no time.

The underframe of this model is cast out of metal (Mazak?), what would be the best way to cut this material?

Thanks

Matt

Hi all,

While the metal chassis is having a bath in white spirit to clean off the gunk, I thought a diversion might be good as interest in the crane has stalled recently.

There's a rather handy photo on the Bartlett website of a crane with a BR 13 ton Medfit match wagon. I bought the relevant Parkside kit a while back with this purpose in mind.

Feels good to actually do some modelling for a change!

With the nights closing in, I really should be making more progress than I am, but I never seem to get around to it at the moment.

I'm particularly taken with the idea of buying an O gauge Terrier at the moment...slippery slope!

Hi all,

Despite life getting in the way, this little project continues to amble along slowly in the background.

A dusty photo showing the various under-bufferbeam protrusions removed, replacement bufferbeams knocked up from plastic sheet and a couple of Smith's couplings. Next up are some new buffers (Lowmac buffers from Lanarkshire models - close enough) and then it's time to make a representation of the brakegear.
