Thanks Guys -
The Derby Line is my intended model of West Hallam on the GN line from Nottingham to Derby. It's been in the planning stage for a long time. I have the building, but not the time at the moment, although there are background tasks taking place to bring it closer, going on.

Cheers

Tony

Lovely Job on the Fairburn Tony, she looks fantastic and captures the power of this class really well. I don't see why anyone would ever build a straight kit build having seen your's and Richards. GN Line you say, will an O2 feature at some point, I particular like this class and would like to know your thoughts on a suitable kit if one exists? The final question to yourself and Richard if may as you chaps are probably the best people to ask on here, I have a Javlin Short fire Box Black Five that I've almost finished in F/S, have you built one and can you recommend a series of upgrading castings as I haven't touched it for about ten years. I'd like to finish it off in the new year as it was a 21st birthday present from my parents and my Dad keeps asking about it

Thanks for your kind comments Mick. I think O2s were rare on the Derby line, it will be a case of O4s, WDS and 8Fs. As for an O2 kit, I'm not sure. Ace might do one, but that would be rather a challenge I think, with probably more scratchbuildig than the K3!
Javenlin Black 5, I've not built one, posessing a Chowbent one built by a friend. I know Steve the Leadman upgraded his Chinese one with some castings from Laurie Griffin - injectors and the like. So that might be first point of call. Ragstone also do some LMS stuff, Andy will send you pictures if you ask for them. Crumbs its been in a nearly finished state as long as some of Richards!

Any other sources that you can think of Richard?

Hi Mick, Tony

I can help you on this one, Mick, as I have a Jim Harris Black 5 nearly finished, and went through the same procedure, though with perhaps a greater degree of necessity:). It's been through 2 rebuilds, and I've taken it as far as I can, but I sure wouldn't start from there again. In fact when I bought it, it was the only Black 5 around, so maybe 20 years ago?

There is precious little left of the original Harris kit, or at least the castings; the main platework remains. I have used all sorts of suppliers over the years for the components.

My first port of call was castings off the MOK 8F. That gave me a goodly chunk of the upgrades. To those I added a Griffin backhead, Finney seats, Sanspareil oilers, Chowbent slidebar support brackets, Hobbyhorse injectors, Underhill tender axleboxes and springs, MOK and Gladiator tender fittings, and I think Heywood buffers. There's probably a few more suppliers thrown in. I didn't use any Ragstone, they weren't available at the time.

I'm actually quite pleased with the end result. The tender is finished and painted, awaiting lining, and the loco has just a few detailing bits to go, mostly on the chassis. I can probably rustle up some pics if that is of any use to you.

Cheers

Richard

Thanks for the tips fellas much appreciated. Photos would be great Richard as it would help to identify the parts needed, the first thing I need to do is get rid of the boiler bands and sort that cab roof out, I must have been drunk when I fitted that as it's a country mile off :headbang: Does LG do all the cab interior fittings as well as the back head?? Below are a couple of pictures which are terrible as they are taken in the dark( which is probably a good thing, how your view changes over the years ), ten years of tarnishing and dust, 45197 looks very sorry for herself at the moment !!

If you like models with lots of pieces, these will be for you! Two MMP Class B tanks under construction. The underframes are nearly done, with just the piping and brake gear to add.
Great kits, the etches all fit together nicely, although I would have preferred lost wax brass castings to white metal. I substituted the w/m buffer housings for Slaters brass ones. the rather crude cut outs to the rear of the buffers are so I can get the nuts on! That won't be noticed from above of course...

You are in front of me, I am doing the class "A" and at a standstill while I get some other stuff finished, I also used Slaters buffers instead of the white metal ones. The brake gear is interesting though innit.
Regarding white metal castings, buffers especially. I think, if the manufacturers didn't include them, it would save them a few bob by not having to buy as much metal, and making the moulds, the saving could be passed on to the purchaser in a small reduction in the kit price, that way the saving goes toward the cost of the new ones which we get anyway.
Mr Parkins, I've got my tin hat on waiting for the b**************ing.

Lovely Tony,

I do so like the MMP stuff, the devil is in the detail and is the part I particulerly enjoy so lots of little bits is right up my street. I'm really looking forward to the new MMP wagons, particularly the LMS Tube wagon, exciting stuff. I'll enjoy watching your progress on these,

I'm looking forward to building my class B one, when I get one of those tuit things! Yours are looking really nice, Tony.

I've seen this debate before, and I'm pretty sure that things like buffers from MMP aren't whitemetal as such, but pewter, a much higher grade.

Out of interest, why DID you discard the w/m buffers?
Did you think they were the wrong shape/type? Not moulded properly? Likely to suffer from damage? Not going to work well when sprung? Likely to wear when sprung?
Or you just prefer brass?

I prefer to use the brass type with the built in springing (not necessarily Slaters) instead of the wire across and through the coupling hook.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Alcazar - the w/m buffers were nicely cast. I just prefer to work with brass if I can - as well as in the case of buffers - it is more robust of course. A consideration as these wagons will be going to exhibitions, not just living quietly on a home layout..
Dan- I'm sure I saw you at Reading - never saw you again to talk to though!

I'll post more pics of progress soon.

Just need another 8 and a 9F:)

Another eight 9Fs? I guess that this is taking operational fidelity to the limits, a one-off show that replicates the last trip to the breakers.

The only time that I saw three GWR 2-8-0 together.... late on a Sunday night, circa 1966, and working north from OOC towards Risborough, only the one in steam had connecting rods.
