7mm The next project. (B1)

Whilst not exactly a secret, it's not I suspect widely public what was coming after the W1.

The final documentation required came through over the weekend and progress could begin in earnest on the next project; the W1 ticks along in the background with castings and instructions but the hunger to etch something was too great. To be fair I hadn't planned on cutting the first sod until after the Doncaster show, but life throws these curve balls at you so you just have to try and make the best of it.

We also had the chance to crawl all over 61264 when it had it's wheels striped out at the NYMR a few years back and those (just shy of 500) photos were burning electrons waiting to be used.

To start the ball rolling I've opted to tackle the hardest part of the etch to work up, there's a couple of elephants in the room in this area so decided to get them out of the way; by comparison the boiler, smoke and fire box will be a breeze and the frames are a straight forward affair.

Currently there's not too much to see, but the cab Beta etch is all but done and laid out, unlike the W1 I already know the box size, so it's much easier working within a known boundary when laying stuff out.

There is a bit of free space which I'll fill with brackets and sundries before sending off.

All I need to do now is finish all the tabbing up, flood fill and then hopefully send to PPD tomorrow, with luck it'll be back in a couple of weeks and then some build photos to keep things ticking along.

Don't fret, the upper cab front is not drawn in the wrong place, these are the half etch overlays and as such are three individual sheets, the lower set is the full fat core structure.

You're not helping my plans for a Midland region shed scene!
Of course I am, I'm giving you the excuse to add race day or holiday special engines legitimately on shed ;) all nice and clean among those grubby MR engines

Seriously though, the B1 was pretty common, I've seen photos of a few on LMS sheds worked in from inter regional trains etc, bit like Black Fives on ER sheds.

Best Beloved and I had planned on including a B1 in our loco fleet for the putative North Bucks-set layout that never was. They were regulars at Northampton on cross country trains, for example, and even made it to Wellingborough on occasions.

B1 is an excellent choice, I was only recently thinking about asking Dave Sharp (MOK) if it was a loco he would consider looking at producing a kit of.

Count me in

A K2 would be nice companion instead!
[sorry I should know better -moderating my own posts now this is verging too close on wish listing:'(]

I wonder if it's some kind of a light for the dials when running at night?

Without a rear bulkhead to reflect the light of the fire it would be a nightmare to see anything after sundown..

I know a few people who know the owner of Mayflower if we can't get an answer..

That's the one, mind I seem to have my K's mixed up and was thinking of the K3 where the cabs were of two different types, I think all K2 had the GNR cab.

Of the two the K3 has a more brutish appeal to me.

The K2s allocated to Scotland had a side window cab which IMO improved the look of them greatly. It would certainly be a kit I would have if that variant were uncluded.

I thought you might have got your K's mixed up as there is a perfectly reasonable kit for the K2.

Martin - the ex-Fourtrack kit now sold by Gladiator comes with all 3 cab variants for the K2's
