4mm The Sentinel (and derivatives) in EM

Just because I can, while Carols from King's fills the background, the rest of my Sentinel fleet, both from Judith Edge kits. The first is this 0-4-0 (yes, like the one Hornby have recently announced), finished in a typical steelworks scheme and seen here on the up main on South Junction:

The second - which is shown in the first couple of posts on this thread - is still waiting for the body to get airbrushed so that I can get on and finish it. The chassis is complete, painted, etc. and is just waiting for that day...

Merry Christmas (again)

Very nice

Did you add separate handrails around the side panels with brass rod? The 7mm kit appears to have them attached as part of the side panel etches.

Yep, that's the same as the 4mm version. I snipped the handrail away and feathered the edges of the side sheets (they are a bit thicker than scale). Since the picture was taken, I've scraped the paint - the yellow is a bit thick - from the handrails, blackened and applied a coat of satin black over the top so they look much finer. That aside, the only other thing to watch for is the windscreen pillars which should be parallel, but aren't as supplied.

Ok, so it's been a while, but dad has got around to spraying the bodywork of the Thomas Hill; next time that I'm down in Somerset, I'll be able to retrieve all the bits and finish it, well, assuming that the buffer beams end up yellow.

Lousy picture mind.

It's been a while, but here, a couple of house moves later, is the near complete Thomas Hill 0-6-0DH. This is sort of a preliminary works photo prior to weathering - not a lot of weathering, because though I like the prototype it is rather pushing the upper bounds of my modelling era! Finished in S&DJR Prussian Blue, with black handrails and - a particularly Thomas Hill 'thing' - red wheels and rods. There's a bit of touching up to do but it is now in one piece and, so long as the handrails remain intact, will remain so. The remaining jobs include a spot of touching up and detail painting - the remaining handrails should be black, not that you can tell, the fuel gauge needs picking out and there are a couple of bare edges from handling during glazing and reassembly operations.

That's all for now.

And here, following a spot of weathering - just a spot, because it's modelled as more or less brand new (the finish follows a shot of a similar loco working at Esholt sewerage works).

The rust at the bottom of the buffer beams reflects scuffing from the bottom of link of the couplings which no, I haven't fitted, yet.

And associated with a wagon - one of my pair of Coil Rs.

All done.

Nice - I like that! I'm a big fan of the Sentinels, but there's something that bit more 'purposeful' about the Thomas Hill ones.

Glad you like it Martin. What's interesting is that they show how quickly tastes in industrial design changed. Sentinel were always very attuned to these and Thomas Hill followed. The early '60s design was driven by Dorman Long and the clearances at their Lackenby works. This resulted in the attractive and award winning, but also cramped and hot cab (which is why you'll seldom see a picture of a working Sentinel with the cab doors closed!).

The Thomas Hill cab was better, being taller, and improved the proportions of the loco. The shape, however, is much more in keeping with a '60s brutalist aesthetic. Mike Edge is working on the steam 0-6-0 version and that's a beast. I'll definitely have one of those when it comes out...

I must get one of RT Model's pre-war versions to complete the set.
