When I travelled to school in Newcastle upon Tyne my train would often pass one of the two ES1 electric locomotives using overhead collection on the Quayside branch. Although a 3rd rail system had been adopted for the passenger lines to the coast before the Quayside branch was electrified, as a recognition of the need to reduce the risk of electrocution to shunting staff, outside the tunnels 600 v DC was delivered by overhead wires.
