Steph, I was most impressed with the results of your work, I do like a good bit of scratchbuilding  :D
I will be interested to see how you get on with the Slaters kit I struggled to conceal the bodyside join with the GW clerestory, but that could be due to my ineptitude with plastic

I had a great time at Simon and Lesley?s grand opening yesterday and managed to purchase copies of Sixties Spotting Days Around The Western Region by Kevin Derrick, The Heyday of the Hydraulics by Hugh Dady and In the Tracks of the "ACE" by Jeffery Grayer, which I managed to get signed by the author, who was in attendance (thanks Jeffery!).  Unfortunately, they've all been confiscated as birthday (two weeks today) and/or Christmas presents!  :'(

I was in the fortunate position of chatting to Cynric and Steph, who had bought some rather tasty models with them.  Cynric has made a fantastic job of his MMP ESSO Class B tank wagon and it looked even better when buffered-up to his Heljan Hymek.

Steph then presented us with his models of 11001 and ?Continental?, an exercise in styrene scratchbuilding that would have had Geoff Kent quaking in his boots!  Talking of scratchbuilding, I was bending Simon?s ear about the lack of progress of late on his DMU cab, so hopefully he?ll venture out into the workshop soon and do some more to it.

Gerry Beale of MRJ/Wild Swan fame was there, but unfortunately, I didn?t manage to have a chat with him (to be honest, I?m rather in awe of him and wouldn?t have a clue what to say anyway!).

I bumped into ?Cookie? and also Captain Kernow a.k.a. Tim Maddocks.  If you weren?t aware, the Captain?s web site is now up and running again and is well worth a look, even though his stuff is a bit smaller than most Thunderers are used to!

Neil was there with his layout ?Shell Island?, but I only managed two fleeting glimpses of it, one when I arrived and one when I left!  Sorry Neil, I?d like to have had a chat and a better look at the layout, but I?d arrived with my wife and as she doesn?t actually like trains she?d gone to sit in the car after a while, so I didn?t want to leave her on her own for too long.  (I needed her there to drive me home, as I?d been at work the previous night and the lack of sleep was definitely beginning to catch up with me!).

I do wish Simon and Lesley good luck with their venture and if you?re ever in the area, I thoroughly recommend you pay the shop a visit - I?m sure you?ll receive a warm welcome.  Although it was good to meet everyone yesterday, it did make actually looking at books a little difficult, so I?ll definitely be going back for a better look one day soon!  :)

Thank you very much to everyone for all their good wishes and for the surprisingly large number of people that turned out for the "Grand opening".

My friend Robert Coles took a few snaps that I will endeavour to get into the local paper, here are family Castens outside the shop with the Titfield poster. Left to right, Harry, Simon, Charlie and Lesley.

Well, it was a brilliant day and I hope that the photos I'm about to post reflect the fact that it's a super little shop.

Things starting to get going - view from the back of the shop:

Here is a group of renowned Thunderers, from the left: Neil, Steve, Cynric and Simon. You may recall the Guv's reference to 'short a*se bu**ers' earlier in this thread....  :))

No offence to Jordan or any one else who comes from Telford but it's not on anybodies approval rating including the better half as she lived there for 10 years.

I arrived home a couple of hours ago. Even after a hearty curry, and vegging out in front of the Grand Prix (never mind Fernando, have a go winning it fair and square next year) I'm still knackered, but what a gas the weekend's been. Saturday seemed to be a huge success, I'm sure that that the future will be too.

A shame I wasn't able to attend. Seems to have been a very succesful day and much fun was had by all. I hope it continues for you Simon the same way that it has started,

best regards,

Mark
