You really have produced a superb model. The extra detail you've created is quite something. Congratulations.
All that external pipework and gubbins makes even our BR Standards look positively bare!

All that work for a static model. I must be mad! I could really get in to Gauge 1 loco building (UK or German), if I had the money to afford it and the space to run it.
Going back to 7mm will feel like 4mm for a while, but I'm looking forward to it.

Many thanks Richard. It's not a handsome beast but it sure is interesting.

So the safety brackets on the connecting rods have been made from waste fret and plastic rod, fitted and painted. Weathering to follow.

Painting the track has also begun with the rail tops in metalcote and the sleepers in matt earth. With some weathering the red oxide primer should past for rust on the rail sides and off course the sleepers need dirtying.

The bunker has now been coaled but I'll add a bit more and then black up any PVA still showing. The Eduard etched grill on the rear bunker platform shows to good effect here.

I took a couple of photos on the kitchen steps as the red brick background from the garden wall affects the hue in evening lighting. The cinder guards are also on now. There are some etched parts in one of the aftermarket sets, but they are a bit fiddly and the glazing is far too thin. The Trumpeter parts look OK to me. I still need to make the linkage for the speedometer which ran off the rear driving wheel.

Other parts still to be added are the conduits and switch boxes for the lighting and off course the lamps as well. It's not obvious in the images, but I beefed up the uprights on the fire iron brackets by adding strips of waste fret, as they were very fragile and prone to bending. Sooner or later they were going to snap off.

Whoops!

I forgot to add these final shots inside the cab before the roof went on. The roof actually fitted quite snugly without any fettling, despite the dry run suggesting it might not. Ahrrr! :rant: Just spotted that I didn't weather the shaft on the coal shovel. I should be able to do it through the look out above the door.

I have really enjoyed this build come together - a superb model. I do like all the intricate detail that you have put into the finished locomotive, even the coal shovel has a finesse about it, you could just take it off the hook and shovel coal with it!

A superb model of a complex, to U.K. eyes, locomotive. Are you getting a glass case to protect it,as the majority of the model is plastic and may not be very durable?

I've had a Trumpeter display case for some time that I intended to use to for a 7mm loco, but never got round to it. It's a little too short in height for the 86, but I may be able to modify the base to raise the cover. We'll see.

I've added a representation of the speedo drive as best as I can based on photos. Unfortunately, with the wheels set as they are the crank is parallel to the coupling rod so does not stand out so well.

This pipe running past the steampipe is the feed to the water pump and this with the addition of the boiler drain pipe, completes the plumbing. I had to use the flash to get to show.

The support brackets to the plumbing under the right hand tank have now been added, as has the junction box and conduit on the side of the motion bracket.

And on the left hand side the conduits and junction boxes have also been added and primed.

That just leaves the plug connections and lamps to completed the addition of parts. I need to source some number plates as the ones in the AMW set are all for DB locos (post war) and I want it to be a post war DR loco.

By the way, the dodgy buffer in post 144 has now been fixed. I must have clipped it before taking the photo and didn't notice until aftdrwards when it fell off. Luckily, it landed on the bench

A really great job. As you inferred, pity there seem to be no spur 0 kits for German locos.

There are! Raimo might be worth a quick search, and there are a few smaller producers. Prices tend to be somewhat higher than we're used to in the UK and most will include wheels, drive, decals and plates in the box.

Peter, I can recommend Ätzschilder for your etched plates. Once you've chosen your number, Rbd and Bw, go for set 1001 Beispiel einer Epoche 3 Beschriftung “DR-Ost”. Also, don't forget a pair of works plates!

Your BR86 really is super!

+1 for Beckert, although my experience with them is in HO. They were very good in producing a couple of very odd sets I needed for DR locos where the locos had a mixture of plate sizes and styles, even if they didn't believe me until I'd sent them some photos!

Actually, building the locos concerned (Weinert kits, with extra gubbins) would be a fun thing to do, I might have a dig for the boxes...

Hi Steph, did you ever build any original M+F kits? They were very good for late 70's technology, before they came to Consett. Beckert are just as good for 0 and 1. Highly recommended. Generally takes 3 weeks.

No, not the originals. I think there's one here (BR75.5), but I've never been sure whether it was M+F or Westmodell as it's in a plain box with what look like Teichmann wheels. I've still got a couple of the DJH versions of the BR18 and BR19 to build, which started off as M+F.

@adrian, can we have a traffic cones emoji for all these diversions please. I think my dad probably needs a contraflow one... :rolleyes:
