I also removed the chequerplate between the running rails as it was too high and locomotives were catching the centre raised section. Having found some photos online I noticed the chequerplate should be at the same level as the foot of the rail and not the head. Therefore, the cheesehead screws supplied, as can be seen in the photos, will have to be replaced with countersunk versions.
Thanks for posting it's interesting to see the progress. Although I'm a little puzzled by this last bit, what exactly is catching on the loco's? If the locos are catching on something that is at rail head height why do they not have the same problem on any turnout? As it traverses a turnout the loco will pass over another rail presumably also at head height? Why is this different?

At a guess, the raised centre section refers to the bit circled in red. If the rest of the chequerplate was at the same level as the foot of the rail, the raised section would probably be the same as the head of the rail and all would be well.

As Steve points out in the photo he has highlighted, the raised portion, which on the prototype covers the bearing cover, because it was higher than rail height was causing some problems. Hence after finding photos of the original turntable (at Kidderminster) I realised the whole length of chequerplate needs to be lower.

Fantastic!

Just a thought, would the Vac cylinders benefit from a little sprinkling of soot and ash over the top of them? Would help to lose that 'sheen' also?

The final weathering session will result in some soot, bits of coal and general detritus in the well too.

Looks good now after the earlier trials and tribulations.

Adding to JB's notes I would also drybrush some gunmetal down the centre of the chequerplate walkways to simulate the polished effect from continual walking/standing by railway crew.
