Talerddig Mk ll: finally some fact instead of a lot of fiction

In my first post I showed a mock up of the trackplan.

I've decided to simplify it to this. Ok, it's one less siding, but with the two, they were so short that they were pretty pointless.

Not the most exciting of trackplans I agree but it'll do me!

The curvilinear nature of each road is appealing, Matt, and - as has been said many times before by those who know what they're taliking about - less is definitely more.

Good start.

Best wishes,

Ok, I've been thinking about this layout. My original plan was a freight only layout as in the plan above. Last few days I've been wondering if I should adapt and have a station instead.

By using the same track formation as my previous layout, Talerddig, I could just about squeeze a run around loop in, provided my train is no bigger than one Mk1 plus loco.

The positives of this are a bit more "purpose" to the layout - although it really would be a compromise with train length. Extending the board is not an option as I really want to stick to this size to enable me to work on it at the dining room table.

Provided I accept the short train, and cramped loop, it does give me a bit more scope, plus I quite like the idea of replicating the trackplan.

What do people think?

Admire how you've managed to squeeze a quart into a pint pot, Matt, but retained the appealing sinuous effect. IMHO it looks protypical.

Of course, a short loop such as this at a terminus - always the exception to the rule as somebody may well point out - would have been extremely unlikely as you know. However, you can always cite modeller's licence, and I've no doubt with your artistic flair, you can make it 'look bigger'.

I've experienced the very same struggle when designing my proposed Cameo layout 'Seacombe' which in reality had only a part of its run round loop before a girder bridge crossed the line, as per the usual useful scenic break on many terminus to fiddle yard scenarios. Due to the rules, land will be at an unprototypical premium, and will probably end up with a single coach scenario such as yours (have you seen the length of O gauge coaches?) despite in reality, having a three-coach length in this space.
In this context, I've decided, rightly or wrongly, that Cameo translates as shrunken, therefore, I will have to accept that either the loop has shrunk, or just build shrunken coaches!

Sorry to go off at a tangent, but hope it serves to illustrate that you're not alone in this.

Yep. I say go for it.

On my Blackbridge Town (Riverside) layout (see elsewhere on this forum) I wrote a one page mini-spec for the layout. In 0 Gauge it is possible to have a decent layout in 2.4m x 0.4m width! I have restricted myself to a single coach/Diesel Railcar or two wagons and a brake van hauled by tank locos. When I mocked it all up full size on the baseboard, as you have done, I found it suited me 100%. So, as others have said, what satifies yourself is what counts and just ignore criticism from anywhere else ;)

Could one siding be a rolling stock works? So a single coach being shunted in/out would work? My first 0 gauge layout Leeming Yard (8'x1') had 3 points, a short runround off a sector plate and one siding was a works building, where stock could be shunted in and removed via a hole in the backscene

Thank you for the comments. As to the short loop, there is a prototype - Llangefni station on the Amlwch branch.

Hi Matt

The baseboard looks great, I have read back but can't see any reference to the size.

Could you please advise?

Many thanks.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the comment - the baseboard is 4' x 1' but adding the curved backscene will reduce this slightly.

**Imagination time!!**

So this is a mock up of the scenic part of the layout.

The station platform will occupy the majority of the "main line" at the rear of the layout.

I think my next step is to mock up/build a few buildings to see how it looks - I'd like some houses in the background if possible.

The expression on the cat's face suggests it has already thought "wooden thing.... uninteresting... next?"

My cat show remarkable interest in whatever I'm doing, around 6pm, until I realise it's feeding time, and get up from the chair.

Best

Work in progress shot of the houses. Based on a card kit but scratch built instead. Lintels were an afterthought - originally going to use Wills plastic windows but changed to Brassmasters for the more refined look. These are a slightly different size so the original apertures were too high. The lintels cover this up!
