4mm Upwell Drove

Readers who have seen my postings in another place may reall that in my imagination, Upwell Drove is the terminus of an agricultural tramway running from the station of Diddington, which is situated in the Cambridgshire Fens. The period modelled is the 1950'5/60's, depending on whether I want to run steam or green diesels (or sometimes a combination of both!)

The model is 4mm scale, 00 gauge. Track is peco code 75 bullhead, with pcb pointwork (except for the double slip, which is peco.) Motive power is rtr. When I was first considering the new terminus for the agricultural tramway, the Model Rail/Rapido J70 was announced. I pre-ordered one, and this was the spur to base the agricultural tramway on the Wisbech and Upwell.

The layout is moving towards completion. I need to finish the village street, add some fencing and gates to the yard, and build the fences on the disused cattle dock. The something different beckons - Yelverton in Devon! I'll post pictures of progress as things develop. In the meantime, here are picures of the current state of play.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Upwell Drove is a bit of a haunt of J70's68222 crossing street 14.4.2019.jpg

Finally, something a bit more modern....

Thank you Chris. I'll get one posted. In essence, it's a simplified version of "Elan" in Iain Rice's book "Finescale for small spaces"

Having seen this lovely layout at first hand, I can safely say it is one of the nicest layouts I have seen.

Very understated and utterly charming.

It's been a few weeks since I posted on this thread. Work on Upwell Drove paused for a few weeks, as the layout was packed away while a new cupboard was installed in the railway room. That is all done, and Upwell Drove is up and running. I built a couple of locos for the new Yelverton project while it was dismantled, but I'm back in East Anglian mode for a while.18.6.19 J70 shunting.jpg
68222 shunts at Upwell Drove. This picture perfectly illustrates my theory about the use of the camera as a modelling tool. Note the wonky lamp irons and the hair across the front windows, both of which I hadn't noticed until I looked at the photograph.

68222 again. Taking a breather between shunts.

Morning Alex.

I have to say this all looks rather pleasant............the J70 is a smashing model....as is the J15.

I have to say that I think I would enjoy weathering both of the above.

Mmmmmmm

The waiting room is more or less finished externally, and I have bedded it in. It still needs an interior for the waiting room part.

Here is 68223 arriving with a 1949 style freight. For thos interested, from back to front the wagons are:
Brake van - scratch; NE 4 plank - 3H; LMS van - Ratio; GW 5 plank - Airfix; J70 by Rapido

Love the ‘openness’ and simplicity of the design, the building has bedded in well too

Thank you. I'm trying to get the feel of a building that has known better days, and is slightly run down. It hasn't seen a passenger for nearly 40 years. The toilets still get used by the yard crews, and the old waiting room is just a store. My favourite bits are the cut out for the down pipe in the decorative brickwork round the waist of the building, and the remainder of the canopy supports by the door.

68223 seen at Elm Lane with a freight for Upwell Drove.
Apologies for the slightly grainy pics, I'm experimenting with posting pictures taken on my phone.

The chap by the lineside is well known railway photographer Jonty Chambers, making his first appearance on WT.

I used an iphone4, processed through irfan view
Thanks - are you just using the standard iPhone camera app then? If you're using irfan are you post processing on Windows or Linux? Personally being all Apple based I use iPhoto but I'm still interested what people use on other systems because I often get asked for advice. I've recently switched to using Halide for photos on the iPhone. Halide: A Premium Camera for iPhone it allows much greater control, manual focus, exposure, iso etc. I'll post couple of photos tomorrow to show what it can do - it is worth looking at if you want to use your phone for photos as it offers a lot more than the standard camera app.

Thanks. That looks interesting. I'm using Windows 10 for post processing. I'll have a further look at halide in the morning.

To add to the mix, all my photos are taken on my Samsung Note 3 mobile phone. I then, to varying degrees, use Snapseed photo editing app to tinker with them.

I rarely, if ever, use a camera to photograph my models.
