After our evening shot, back to running trains. In my last group of pictures with Burmington Grange I mistakenly said that her next turn was to take out the train she had brought in. Actually her next turn is a semi fast goods.

The express to Manchester will be taken out by Western Enterprise after she has disposed of the South Devon set in the Crriage sidings. After that she reverses back on to the Manchester set.

and then leaves.

Possible change of direction. Kingsbridge is almost finished. I need to populate a couple of areas and perhaps some more Dockside clutter. Whilst I'm pretty pleased with the way its gone and the look of the thing, there is something at the back of my head saying you need a change. I have often said when commenting on more urban threads that I do like some urban grime (or words to that effect).

I perhaps have made the mistake of not only buying and devouring Mr. Rice's Cameo Layouts book I have also re read his other books and my thoughts are turning towards something smaller, say some 6ft + fiddle yard, in the cameo style with proscenium arch etc.

An idea came to me whilst reading Model railway, PLANNING and DESIGN, a layout called Capital Yard took my eye. Playing about with it on my computer I realised that I could cut the Diesel Stabling yard own to 6ft and have a raised parcels siding and platform behind it, (another of Mr. Rice's ideas--Bitsa stations) Possibly even a the terminus end of a platform so that you only ever see a loco and 2 coaches That will have to wait until proper planning ie on wallpaper backing paper.

This is what I've messed about with from the original design by Neil Ripley

Unfortunately I do not have the space to keep Kingsbridge so if I do go down the cameo road it will have to go. It does mean there will be far more space in the railway room. My wife even suggested a sofa. It would also mean a better book and magazine storage.

You never know it might not happen, but this idea has been burrowing away for a year or two now and I think Iain Rice's book has brought it to the fore. if it does go ahead it will be at least several months before anything happens and I will have one big photo shoot before Kingsbridge goes

Mr Rice has an awful lot to answer for Alan, his thought and ideas have been inspiring me for years.

As you know, I'm a member of the 'less can mean more' brigade, and find that approach to modelling very satisfying. Your plan looks interesting, but how about the station being approached on a viaduct, with a low level goods or parcel depot? I think you would enjoy modelling a cameo, so get the wallpaper out, even if your plans come to nothing, then at least you will have had a bit of fun;)

Good luck.

Not posted for a couple of weeks as I have been away. I have however been contemplating and cogitating.

Would what I hope to do qualify as a cameo layout and if it does should I enter it the Cameo Layout competition? I shall think on.

As I said in the previous post I have been working on a quarter size model/plan of the possible cameo layout. It's a lot cheaper than building a layout. Any way the results of my efforts.

first a plan view without buildings view. The station platform is the equivalent of platform 10 or whatever. It will take a loco and one and a half coaches. the coaches can the leave followed by loco which then appears lower down to refuel.

Plan with buildings

And finally a full frontal

At the moment it is 6ft x 2ft with long radius Peco points but by using medium points and closing the odd gap between some of the points it may be possible to get the length down to about 5ft 3 ins.

Not sure whether to enter it in the Cameo competition

After an unscheduled stop in my local hospital to get rid of a gangerous appendix (hence no recent updates) I have now finished the plan for a cameo style layout, s
Managed a few hours work on the new plan. It is now 5ft x 2ft still the same format as the quarter model, but now I've drawn it out full size. Luckily our dining room table is nominally 5ft x 2ft 6ins.

Very neat little plan Alan, does this mean you have taken a definite decision now on Kingsbridge ? Be sad to see it go but it pays never to look back.

ERRR No. Although we do eat some meals on trays on knees. It was convenient to use as a drawing table. I'm not too partial to drawing on my hands and Knees. The layout, when I get started will be built in the present railway room.

Back to a bit of detailing on Kingsbridge
As promised I've added one or two figures to the layout

1st a family waiting to go into the ice cream parlour

2nd clutter round the fishing boat

And finally a family relaxing and admiring the harbour scene

I do have one or two more people to add.

Judging by the photographs I think you have sufficient people and vehicles on the layout i.e. less is more.

The fact the number of mariners and related industry workers outnumber the local townsfolk and tourists gives the impression of a small working harbour between tides. And I also like the lack of or at least one or two passengers on the platforms which add to the effect.

This is how I remember some harbours when sailing around the west coast of Scotland over the last few years. They become a hive of activity when the fishing boats come in then go quiet for 12 hours until the next high tide.

Excellent work and observation .
