Western Access panels

Referring to Diesels in Depth Westerns on p46-47 there is a shot of D1000. Normally between the cab steps and the sandbox filler there is an access hatch -are my eyes deceiving me or is it not there? Similarly Looking back at Westerns P10 D1006 appears not to have the access panel either, there are other shots showing this as well. Could anybody confirm/agree with me or shed any light it?

Hi Cynric,
Yes that is a strange one  I have looked at some of my pics of D1000 in maroon and it seems that on A end cab secondman side the access panel is'nt there but on B end it is. :? I have also looked at other pics of locos before they were painted into blue and on this side they also seem to be missing. Once they were in blue they seem to appear, so whether it was a alteration during the works visits or not ,i'm puzzled. If you look at D1062 page 45 in Looking back at the Westerns it also seems to be missing but look at page 41 and D1056 has the panel so now i am even more confused :? Also page 60 shows D1030 without.
Sorry i havent been much help Cynric  but my guess is that during there works visits and re-paint into blue they had the panel fitted on both sides.
When i get some more time i will go through my booklets with works reports in and see if that can shed any light on it

its an odd one isnt it? there is another on P65 of 'looking back' and on P551019 is sat ex works without  . there doesnt seem to be any pattern to it and as you say they all seemed to acquire the panel. I hadnt thought about the A and B cab end...I will go back and have a further look

Cynric,
i have had a bit of a look, so far i've come up with;
D1064 went into works 21/10/64, work carried out says modifications MB407/25-Fitting doors in bodyside for access to compressormotor brushes. I'm now trying to find pics before entering works and leaving works at that time.
D1019 into works 14/8/63 and states having the same mod MB407/25
D1006 into works 2/9/64 " " " " " " ". Now that goes with the pic on page 10 as that was dated 8th march 64
D1055 into works 9/9/65 same mod carried out. MB407/89 mod done. (so both mods done at same visit to works)
D1018 into works 8/5/64 " " " "
Now i've just gone through some more works reports and have now come up with mod MB407/89- Fitting of hinges to access door in cabside and alterations to main steam pipe 'A' end. this was dated 26/6/67.
I will look into this further but not sure which mod it is

well thats obviously what it is. As time went on the doors became pretty beaten up and used, so they must have been necessary for maintenance, it just seems odd that some locos were fitted from new and some werent

Hi Phill,
There were a few in full maroon and just a yellow bufferbeam,
D1001,D1005,D1006,D1007,D1008,D1009,D1039,D1040,D1041,D1042 and D1043
The dates are from 12/10/62 - 02/07/63. These are'nt in order as D1009 was the last of these loco's into this livery.
