Western cab window frames

Whilst finishing the glazing I noticed that the cab frames are a bit clunky has anybody else done anything about this? I can see me getting the sanding sticks out later   or am I being on old woman? - hopefully this shows what I mean

Yes they are a little chunky, perhaps etch stainless overlays in the kit would have been better

BTW it's my pic (not that it matters) ;)

Difficult call, the photo does show that the model has frames that are a touch chunkier than the real thing but photos always unfairly focus attention on things like this that the eye would otherwise be unaware of. The other consideration is ones ability to make a neat remedial job; there are deficiencies in my models that I have made a very conscious decision not to address, as I generally I can live with something that's neat but wrong, where something that's right but lacks the sharpness of the rest of the model just grates.

I think I can do something about the cab window, just to reduce the projection around the window. The trouble is that now I have noticed it I cant see anything else :headbang: :headbang:

The cab door & side window gutters look equally chunky compared to the real thing...........at least the windows & gutters match

The more you look at something Cynric, the more potential improvements you'll find. I think that's why it's taken me so long to build mine, but I want to get it finished now and having made more than enough additional work already, I'm happy with how my windows look. :)

maybe you are right  I think a little weathering helps, but even so....
Now the next one will be a different story....

Neil & CME, some wise words indeed. I have waited for the glazing to dry and applied some light weathering which improves it somewhat. I shall do something to the next one though!!

Just been having a look at the cabs on mine & in the flesh it really isn't noticeable at all IMO . I think I will do one or two of the mods Dan & Cynric have done, but my Wezzy will be very much a layout loco, you guy's keep raising the standard  ....... so I might just build mine in secret

I won't bother with all the mods on the next one! At least I know which have the best return, one thing is sure, I will br using an ABC drivetraim

Yes I'm very tempted to get a ABC motor bogie (if I can get away with one), do you think one will have enough power for full length trains ? . I'm very impressed with the quality engineering of yours  , but I don't think my budget would spread to two ABC's

I had my Western pulling 8 Bachman mk1s on the model engineers track, I think it would pull more with some extra weight, but the trailing bogie gave out :headbang: (modifications and ballraces are in hand!)

I converted my Heljan Western over to P4 last year and have quite a rake of Chocolate and Cream MK1 to go behind it, but haven't converted them over yet! Must do that because it would certainly look good! ;)

Nick

Sounds like a worthwhile purchase then  .......especially with the miles I intend to put on mine  , I've had all the bits out of the box tonight, I'm very impressed  ......... parts that actually fit together are a bit of a novelty for me
