Westies Work Bench

To be honest Tony other than POW sides I don't know of anyone else tht supply that kind of thing. The last time I was in Darley Dale the Slaters lot were saying they are wrapping up that end of their range and handing it all to POW sides. Next on the bench for me are a couple of Hickleton wagons and I plan to hand letter these as per the John Hayes book. The good thing about modelling the early fifties late forties is that I can get away with a less than perfect finish as by then they're well weathered, so the hand lettering only has to represent what once was !

Woodhead used to produce dryprint transfers for various sizes of PO lettering in white and white/shaded black in 'normal' and 'condensed' fonts so you could make up your own. Sadly they disappeared from the market 10 years ago when Nigel Annand or Allard (depending on your source) closed the business due to poor returns.

HMRS still have a range of PO Alphabets in various sizes in both Pressfix and Methfix and may be worth a thought.

Cheers, Dave

If they don't stick, and they probably won't, you could try treating them like methfix. Something I read somewhere, though I haven't tried it myself (yet)...

It does but not always but if that fails then get some Microscale industries liquid decal film and paint the backs.

I have found that with the older Woodhead ones they go a bit brittle so need a couple of coats then use as waterslide. See my WB thread for a couple of examples of them - the fridge van being one and the Midland/LMS cattle wagons being others that sprint to mind.

Rob,
Where can one obtain this Microscale liquid decal stuff; it sounds very interesting! (Eileen's Emporium don't stock it).

It's made by the same company I see and I thought he was after a solution for fixing the decals? Apologies if I got it wrong

Hi Mark, I wasn't sure if there had been a bottle of the decal film but it had sold in the time between posts - you never know with eBay and buy it now. It wouldn't have been the first thing that I have missed by procrastinating:rolleyes:

I've just bought one from 'kitlady' – there's plenty more if anyone want's any.

Just a little update...albeit somewhat delayed, something to do with life, family and health issues getting in the way of modelling !.
Anyway last June I started a small batch build of three LNWR D84 opens. Two were the resin based tarpaulin covered versions, one being a Richard De Camin original packaging. The third was the 'standard' ABS whitemetal based offering, bought as an unopened kit off ebay, I discovered that some of the packing was a page from the TV Times...dated Oct 1988 !!.
Following my normal (!) practice I set out to fit D&S etched compensated W irons as the supplied components only allowed for a rigid setup. As far as the resin versions were concerned this entailed fitting a framework inside the resin shells made from evergreen styrene sections as a base for the brass gubbins . An apology here ...the photos of this are 'trapped ' on my old computer following its untimely and unexpected demise !.
Construction was straightforward and pretty painless.
I would welcome comments on my efforts with painting the tarpaulins...my first attempt with trying to portray them.
Cheers Tony.

Very nice Tony, the tarps look to have come out really rather well, better in my view than the empty/unsheeted version; the drybrushed highlighting is fine, but I can't work out how a real wagon would have acquired the vertical off-white streaks that seem fairly apparent on my monitor (though they might not be so obvious in reality).

Adam,
the photo does look different to 'real life'...or is it my fading eye sight ?!!.
That's the good thing with 'this place'....you get a much better class of opinion ! and to be honest sometimes you need to step back and get a second view point.
Cheers Tony.

Right then..I've given the offending wagon a 'seeing to' with cotton buds and some 'specially' selected dirty white spirit !. Any better ??.
Cheers Tony.
