When your mojo goes AWOL

Ive got to disagree I'm afraid, this is one example of 2 being more than 4 (but only when surrounded by plywood) ;)

In 1940 I could at least fly as far as Glasgow in most of my aircraft, but not now! It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito. I turn green and yellow with envy. The British, who can afford aluminium better than we can, knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they give it a speed which they have now increased yet again. What do you make of that? There is nothing the British do not have. They have the geniuses and we have the nincompoops. After the war is over I'm going to buy a British radio set - then at least I'll own something that has always worked.

Given the diversity of bubble-mania in this group... anyone got any suggestions for restoration of a fuel tank from a 1943 Dodge WC-51? Symptoms were continual choking of the carb jets with orange sludge. Removed petrol tank and flushed the inside to remove the rust residue. Now need a chemical wash to remove the surface rust before applying an ethanol-proof sealer to the inside surfaces of the tank.

I have drawn a blank in regard to companies who offer such services in the south.. and not sure yet about a supplier for products.

Sheared some of the screws fixing the tank sender unit... think these are UNC no.8 32tpi and Bob Alderman has posted some samples to confirm identity. If thread type is as written, need to locate a taper tap to redo the threaded holes (I have drilled screw in hole to thread depth).

What say you?

If you require no. 8.32 UNC taps try here, www. engineering-supplies.com
UK based company with an outstanding range of tools at reasonable prices.

Of course, two Mozzies in formation is Four Merlins.....

Ohhh yes .. now your talking

Sadly not possible until the next Mossie is completed (couple of years?), but in the meantime how about 3 Merlins and a de Havilland Goblin in formation?

I think I may have just revealed one of my many bubbles ;)

Hi ZiderHead,

many thanks for posting that, could have only been improved had it been one of 613 Squadron's aircraft coming into Lasham.

cheers

You only need a single Merlin when the aircraft to which it is attached is flown like this!

That reminds me of being the sound recordist on a BBC crew on Fair Isle some years ago filming a Loganair Islander taking off from the island air strip. It was to be a similar shot to that in the video with the plane taking off over the camera. The cameraman was also going to do a whip round and take a receding shot of the plane. Come the shot, I was beside the cameraman with my head down watching the sound levels on my Nagra. The plane took off over us, but when the cameraman and I tried to turn round quickly to do the receding shot, we tripped over the bodies of the rest of the production crew flat on the ground. Apparently the wheels on the fixed undercarriage had passed on each side of the camera on the tripod and everyone else had dived for cover.:):)

well remembered Jordan, I enjoyed that when I read it some years ago - he also had a few tales to tell with two Merlins in his Mosquito days.

cheers

Skewing things back from Merlins for a little, sadly, the greasy spoon proprietor got a good deal on some surplus paint and spent a day slapping it about with a 6-inch brush he found in a field.

Thoughts will now turn to the groundworks and other details.
