7mm Where would you start if thinking "HST"?

A nice and simple question.

If you wanted to build a HST, with a preference for resin / plastic over brass for coach bodies, then what current coach kits might you consider as possible starting points for the passenger coaches of an HST set?

Simples question, hope there is a simples answer.

thanks, Graham

Yes HST trailers are pretty similar to MK 3 coaches at least to look at on the outside, the insides were different and the electrics are very different but that doesn't really bother us.

The only kits available to my knowledge are those by PRMRP and made from brass. The mk 3 coaches appear make up quite nicely from the few that I have seen.

What we really want though is for Laurie to do these properly but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Heljan might do then but no doubt they will bugger them up somehow.

Richard.

The prototype mk3s were slightly different to a mk3a (loco hauled type) in that they had different doors. The production mk3bs for hsts (and a very small batch of loco hauled firsts) had different roof vents and wheel slip gear. The mk3b loco hauled firsts has built in tail lights too.

If doing blue and grey it's worth noting that the livery was different between HSTs and loco hauled stock.

This all gets ruddy complicated. There aren't any sensible HST or Mk3 stuff in 7mm at the mo. Just look at the window heights and the way the livery completely fails to fit on the PRMRP power cars. Especially if looking at blue/grey or executive...

So, for the moment I've given up. I'll probably end up deploying the die cutter, or perhaps JLTRT's upcoming Mk3 carriages. But the power cars? Goodness knows...

Just a couple of errors in your designations Jim....

The protoype Mk3s - both loco hauled and HST variants were just designated that - Mk3 Prototype
All of the HST production Mk3's were designated plain Mk3
The Loco-hauled Mk3s were either Mk3a (the bulk of them inc. the sleeper) or Mk3b and only for the final batch of 41 FO and BFOs

All had wheelslip prevention equipment the Mk3s some by Girling but the majority BR's own version. The protoypes and the 3a's all had Girling equipment, and the 3B's BR. Apart from the Wheelslide the most obvious external differences were of course the lack of buffers and duplicated air hoses 3-phase ETS jumpers along with the fixed alliance couplers. Not forgetting that almost all HST's as built had a single plenum chamber on each roof end as did the Mk3a sleepers and Mk3b's as opposed to the protoype and loco-hauled Mk3a's which were instead fitted with three Roevac ventilators on the roof above each end.

Question is Graham - where are you going to get the Power Cars!

Laurie mentioned MK3s were on JLTRT's to-do list. But that was a couple of years ago and each time I've asked since he's said there's lots of things they want to do. If you contact and register interest I'm sure that'll help move things along. but I'm sure they need a lot of interest to actually put them into production... One day perhaps:)

I think a HST set should come with a free garden railway! I'd love a prototypically geared full HST rake, screaming around 10' radius curves in the backyard that I don't have...........

Mmmmmmm another on the yo do list after the Mk2's , 310 ' s , 304 and the APT 's. As the first thing on the list is well underway and the second started I forecast it will be 2020 before I can even look at it, lol

Hi Bob

I did say that mk3bs had different wheel slip gear not that they were the only ones with it, sorry if that wasn't clear. I have seen mk3 hst catering vehicles with girling wheel slip gear and mk3a RFMs also had the single roof vents.

One of the first mini articles I did on my site covered mk3 variations, probably should have just linked to that in the first place! :)

The window frames were different on the prototypes too.

Didn't Skytrex make a HST set a few years back? They might still have the moulds and be persuaded to run a few off?

I'm not sure about the Mk3, but the power car doesn't look too bad, it looks better than some of their other offerings, such as the 37.

Is that skytrex' own advert?? The power car does look rather good , but thats because its the Lima OO model! You can see the coupling hoop, and the coaches are the old hornby 'shorty' mk3s from the 70s:)) with the couplings snipped off.
I did see the actual skytrex hst and mk3s at a show once. Chatham I think . The were quite simply shi...

Yes, it's from the Skytrex catalogue, that I picked up from Chatham about 8/9 years ago.
