Wiring bulbs for DCC

Yes, but the resistor values would be same if using a conventional function output for LEDs. Sorry for not making that clear!

Actually; re-reading the instructions it appears that ESU are suggesting the use of resistors to the values stated and conventional outputs and their LED function setting if you want to use LEDs.

No I don't it's straight on to the card.
I tune the lighting levels using the lokprogrammer on scale of 1 to 31 , makes set up so much easier than typing in high number cv values for auxiliary outputs, plus they are then hard set to that level.

I feel the need to lie down in a dark room with a mug of tea:confused:
Is it possible to program the CVs from my Lenz handset as I don't have any hi tech equipment?
Thanks Steph, Cliff and and all for your input, I love to hear different views on resolving (for me) a problem, it's what makes this site so enjoyable and interesting!
Please keep the suggestions and advice coming, I'm gradually absorbing!
I'm really looking forward to hearing the results of your speaker and enclosure Cliff!! I'm sure the neighbours will too! :)

Richard,
You can set CV values from a handset, but it's a complete pain to do and keeping track of them can be a nightmare. I used to do that and had an awful lot of hassle with MSExcel keeping it up to date...
I now use a SPROG and JMRI, as do many others on this 'site. Then programming or reading back from a decoder are nothing more complicated than a couple of mouse clicks.

The Duff sounds good on my speaker set up.

I left my 37/4 ticking over in the garden at Over Peover at the weekend at dusk behind a hedge, some new 37 enthusiasts arriving late were asking where is the Mainline as they walked down the long garden? They got excited that they could be close to a 37.
I enjoyed that!
Similar happened at the Deltic Gathering at Bury, people kept sprinting up the stairs to see the Deltic back early, only to discover a model throbbing away.
Speaks for itself.

If you would like a Duff chip pre-configured to suit your auxiliary outputs I can do this for you when I supply the speakers. Just let me know the number of auxiliaries to modify and the bulb size going on them.

I have your 35mm round speaker, enclosure, XL mounting plate and a couple of wiring harnesses.
Who's sound program do you use?

Richard,

It's a fairly ordinary piece of hardware in the SPROG and the website lists MAC drivers on their FAQ page.

Steph,
Only had a quick browse, obviously missed it.
I have a few decoders that could do with fine tuning, so may be worth a chunk of my budget. Perhaps I can come out of retirement to pay for it, won't keep getting lumbered with housework either! ;)

Richard

It is well worth investing in a Sprog (or a Lok Programmer if you only want to use ESU decoders) if you are going to get to grips with DCC, there is so much that you can do and the right tool makes it so much easier.

Checked out the SPROG again, and as Steph says, it is compatible with my Mac Pro. It looks like the Lok programmer isn't though.
Crikey, this programming malarkey is looking a bit high tech. My eldest son is a programmer so maybe if I ask nicely I may be able to book a couple of hours tuition! He has no interest in railways though, even after many years of intensive training...

I have his class 33 and 108 sounds, and will use his sound project for my thumper. I will check out YouTube for his 47.

Hi guys!
Stephen Widdows at DJH has offered to replace my lighting kit for their latest version. Let you know the outcome when it arrives.

...so the replacement lighting kit arrived a couple of weeks ago.
The kit is identical except the diodes are missing!
Bit miffed paying postage to return original kit, when all I needed to do was throw away the diodes !!

Cliff, I have checked out the XL instruction manual and can see how to wire the 1.5v bulbs back to UVAR. But as the head code panel has 3 bulbs and the tail lights will be wired as a pair, this will bring the voltage up to 4.5v and 3v. The instructions show the disconnection of resistors if above 1.5v. Did you do this or leave the resistors soldered in?

I tested my bulbs individually today with a 1.5v Duracell battery, and none light up. Tried another battery just in case.
I checked all bulbs with my avo meter and all show a resistance so should be ok.
I am a tad worried to try 3v incase I blow the bulbs.
Am I being a muppet, and doing something wrong? Should I try a non alkaline battery?

When doing working headlamps with micro 1.5v bulbs into LNER lost wax brass oil lamps I simply hook them up to the UVAR terminal on the chip and the headlight terminal. If I need to adjust the brightness I use lokprogrammer to adjust the brightness, that is what works for me.
For 12v bulbs into diesels I use the normal common terminal at the bottom and again adjust the brightness to get the dim bulb look, as let's face it there is nothing that looks more like a dull incandescent bulb than an incandescent bulb!

Thanks Cliff.
I will have to adjust the brightness the hard way I'm afraid... no Lokprogrammer.
Still haven't managed to get a glimmer out of the bulbs :(
