Ahh. Hmmm. Good point.

If the solebars / middle bearers were timber then I would expect the planks to be nailed. If the solebars etc. were steel channel then I would expect cup-head bolts.

I hope it's OK to add something to an old thread but at least it will keep the technique together.

I have recently been experimenting with trying to simulate aged wooden telegraph poles and found a suggestion on the web about using a potion made from vinegar and iron filings. A forage in the kitchen turned up red-wine and organic cider vinegars. I used the cider vinegar (which apparently is stronger) and a ball of steel wool left to stew for a couple of days. The results were quite interesting as follows:

The first imageshows various dilutions on a dowel rod from 1:4 to 1:2:

The second shows a 1:2 dilution used on dowel, two types of coffee stirrer and Scale 7 walnut sleeper (which has become as black as ebony):
