'Word' look-a-like for the pc, recommendations please

I'm looking for a simple program that will do what word does, won't hog the memory of my cheapo laptop, compatible with Windows 10 and hopefully with Word itself. Any recommendations? Please also bear in mind I was born in god's own and the reason I ask is that I object to making Bill gates richer than he already is.

I use Open Office for exactly the same reasons!

I second Open Office, does pretty much everything MS Office does and it's free!

Open office will also open MS Office files, and you can also save as them too, handy at times!

And a break away from Open Office is Libre Office, also free and reads Microsoft documents and Excel spreadsheets

Switch to one of the various Ubuntu/Linux o/s, & never pay Mr Gates another penny ever again!!

I use a Chromebook most of the time these days with my aged Mac for other tasks such as managing my music so I tend to use Google Docs for my word processing requirements.
I can easily access docs from my phone, convert them to pdf format and email them.

We use Open Office in my workplace of several hundred, so I guess it must be OK...

Open Office is near enough dead. Don't start there.

Libre Office is a fork from Open Office, and is under continued development. Worth considering as an option.
