Very interesting that some of R.P. Brereton's files went to the GWR Engineer's Plan Office (the 'Victorian Railways' folder). Brereton was a consulting engineer who took over as the Victorian Railway's Inspecting Engineer following Brunel's death. Royal Engineers officers were initially engaged for the task until they were told they were not allowed to, and Brunel took it on very diligently. Good to have the contract and contract drawings for the supply of some switches and crossings for Victorian Railways contemporary with the chaired track at Ballarat. A tiny contract compared with others for the VR. Brereton dealt with contracts for permanent way material costing hundreds of thousands of pounds for Victoria around 1860.
